Devin Du Village, Le (The Village Soothsayer)
Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Intermde in one act. 1752.
Libretto by the composer.
First performance at Fontainebleau on 18th October 1752.
The love of Colin and Colette, disrupted by the intervention
of the nobility, is mended, largely through the intervention of
the Soothsayer.
Rousseau's work reflects contemporary interest in the natural
man, while also offering the Paris Opra an alternative to the
tragdie lyrique in the Querelle des Bouffons, the quarrel
between those who favoured the traditional French form and
those who preferred Italian opera buffa. Rousseau's piece
offers a French version of the latter, while endowing the continuing
pastoral convention with some philosophical and even political
justification.
