Quite well written. I was actually thinking of Lu Han when I posted my previous piece on expressing nobility in literature.
Again, this is an coincidence I love to find in life. From reading Lu Han's recent writing, I somewhat have a sense that he is one of the few who still cares about writing or displaying nobility in prose writing. He still likes to express or appraise some kind of nobility in human nature, while the current trend or fashion (including Mr. Yu) is devoting its energy in exposing the dark side of human nature.
As I siad earlier, this is a worldwide trend of the 20th century, or even earlier. In fact, it already hit China in the 1940s. The vangard group in literary circle then already noticed and tried to advocate this western trend. Even in Yan An (the Communist base) the question was raised, but only to be stopped by Mao, who wrote something to the effect that It's not necessarily great to expose the dark side of socialism and it's not necessarily trivial to appraise the bright side of socialism. And that prety much ends the discussion in the coomunist era in China. The issue was never raised again until the last years of the 20th century. In that sense, China is just catching up, and maybe we need a period of time for a fully catching up.
My question is simply this. In the long run, as a human society (in both West and China), do we ever again need this kind of affirmation of nobility in human nature in literature (novel and prose in particular)?
I noticed that Lu Han cited Hugo and Dickens in his article, and that is exactly what I cited in my previous post. Coincidence again! But it just speaks for itself. This is a question originally somewhat raised by Maya. I hope she will join the discussion too. - Re: 江到浅处流也湍,风骚不逊细浪潭 --- 就知青一代的青年岁月与余杰商酌posted on 11/29/2003
