Here's the link to the lecture on Shostakovich, the audio CDs are now on sale, $24.95 for a $134.95 value. I strongly recommend everyone who's interested in both music and humanity listen to it.

I don't have a favorite philosopher. Yet on the view of life in gerneral I like Existentialists' stand. To put it short, they hold that a huamn being is constantly in the making, he/she creates himself/herself by the choices he/she makes, and he/she is ultimately responsible for the consequences of his/her choices and actions. Therefore this human being, in existing, chooses his/her essence (human nature).
This stand, is probably the furthermost human can stretch to exercise their free will, if there is one. Therefore in my humble opinion existentialism is by far the most optimistic philosophy to challenge fate and to regain human diginity.
(What was I talking about? Anybody understand? Am I drunk? :)
Not quite sure about the current situation of American academia of philosophy field. My impression is that much of philosophical efforts today are devoted to the study of human brain and consciousness. Almost a merge into cognitive neuroscience.
I personally think that ½С was quite a self-centered person.
