How interesting, I was just reading the "Gold and Diamonds" chapter from Tristes Tropiques. Here's what Levi-Strauss says about discovering gold in Cuiaba, a town close to the border with Bolivia, since I can't find OuroPreto in map, I don't know how far is Cuiada from it -
The founding of Cuiaba goes back to the middle of the 18th century. About 1720, explorers from Sao Paulo called bandeirantes penetrated into the region for the first time. They established a small post with a few settlers not far from the present site of the town. The country was inhabited by Cuxipo Indians, some of whom agreed to work on the cleared land. One day, a settler - appropriately called Miguel Sutil - sent a few natives to look for wild honey. They came back that same evening with handfuls of gold nuggets that they had simply picked up from the ground. Sutil and a companion called Barbudo - the Bearded One - at once followed the natives to the spot where they had made their find. There was gold lying about everywhere, and in one month they gathered five tons of nuggets ...

Fuge's quote is in Chapter 10 of the book.
Ouro Preto is in Minas Gerais province, not in Pantanal.
Quite far a distance. Here is the city page:

Disagree with Fuge's last paragraph. - Re: 黑金城传奇(赋格)posted on 12/12/2004
