Travel is a great way to enlarge one's horizon, especially so when one is young, when his mindset is forming. But in adult life frequent travel is more like a life style, however free-spirited and desirable, it can't be a real way to produce intellectual fruits. I believe to create one has to sit down and write, to have a framework of stable life, thus to allow himself dig deeply into his own thoughts. Emily never traveled, but her poetry nevertheless revealed a rich world, full of time and space, and nature. Mind travels, which most great writers do, can go far deeper and broader spaces than physical ones.
Yet don't get me wrong. I am not against travel. I am just saying it can't be a main road to literary creation. It's more a life style to make one's life richer and more colorful. Though many travelers can't generate deep thoughts in their busy, transient, and many times shallow, impressions of places and people they encounter, they bring a refreshing world to us all. When I saw others' travel posts and pictures, I became excited and engaged too, and admire and thank them for sharing their experience with us all.
For me, if I one day have time to travel, more frequently and farther, it's the world that already exists in my mind and imaginations I want to reach. If the yearning calls from distant mountains and rivers, the faint echoes from human past now buried in oblivion, can stir the noble resonance and the innermost voices in me, I will be blessed with the most wonderful intoxication. Then poetry may emerge and prosper.
