Sontag did not practice the art of restrained discourse. Writing in the 1960s about the Vietnam War she declared "the white race is the cancer of human history." Days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, she criticized U.S. foreign policy and offered backhanded praise for the hijackers.
"Where is the acknowledgment that this was not a `cowardly' attack on `civilization' or `liberty' or `humanity' or `the free world' but an attack on the world's self-proclaimed superpower, undertaken as a consequence of specific American alliances and actions?" she wrote in The New Yorker.
"In the matter of courage (a morally neutral virtue): whatever may be said of the perpetrators of Tuesday's slaughter, they were not cowards."

Against Interpretation, 1964
Ours is a culture based on excess, on overproduction; the result is a steady loss of sharpness in our sensory experience. All the conditions of modern life - its material plentitude, its sheer crowdedness - conjoin to dull our sensory faculties. And it is in the light of the condition of our senses, or capacities (rather than those of another age), that the task of a critic must be assessed.
What is important now is to recover our senses. We must learn to see more, to hear more, to feel more.
Our task is not to find the maximum amount of content in a work of art, much less to squeeze more content out of the work than is already there. Our task is to cut back content so that we can see the thing at all.
The aim of all commentary on art now should be to make works of art - and, by analogy, our own experience - more, rather than less, real to us.

Chomsky can never be clear-minded like Sontag (and that Said too, what a mess :) But they are all labeled as the anti-America leftist. :)
The quote you put here was produced from the mind of a 31 year-old woman, can you believe that? We might not be able to see someone so intelligent and sharp-minded in a long while.

--Yes, I do. Didn't she go to the university of Chicago at the age of 16?
"We might not be able to see someone so intelligent and sharp-minded in a long while."

Chomsky doesn't seem muddle-headed when it comes to his linguistics. Don't you think there is something in common between the pro-Americanism of the Chinese liberals and the anti-Americanism of the American liberals? They all think "外来的和尚会唸经." :-) - posted on 01/03/2005

Exactly. Not only the excess of material goods, too much government and corporate power, too much spirituality and sexuality, too much exposure and enclosure, too much of everything. Can you get rid of all that? :-)
Happy new year to you all!

Re: Susan Sontag died in NYC todayposted on 01/03/2005
- posted on 01/03/2005
Sontag campaigned relentlessly for human rights and throughout the 1990s traveled to the region of Yugoslavia, calling for international action against the growing civil war. In 1993, she visited Sarajevo and staged a production of “Waiting for Godot.”

- Re: Susan Sontag died in NYC todayposted on 01/03/2005
- Re: Susan Sontag died in NYC todayposted on 01/03/2005

too much government and corporate power, too much spirituality and sexuality, too much exposure and enclosure, too much of everything.
Too much spirituality -
Can you get rid of all that? :-) - Hopeless. I can't even get rid of everything that I want to get rid of in the house. Damn!
Have a good year everyone.
