为什么船只被称作“她”？

有住在加拿大的新苏格兰(Nova Scotia)的朋友，某日路过一个渔村，在村子里一个小小的渔业博物馆的墙上，读到一首无名氏的打油诗，觉得有趣，便抄下来电邮给我。原诗是这样的：
Why a ship is called a she?
A ship is called a "she" because there is always a lot of bustle around her.
There is usually a gang of men about; she has a waist and stays.
It takes a lot of paint to keep her good looking.
It is not the initial expense that breaks you, it is the upkeep.
She can be all decked out.
It takes an experienced man at the helm, she is absolutely uncontrollable.
She shows her topsides, hides her bottom.
When coming into port, always heads for the buoys!!
我们都知道，在西方文化里，船只或者任何交通工具或载体都被视做女性，因为她们运载和保护着生命。在中国文化里，因为汉语的名词一般没有性别，船只的概念应属中性。在中国福建一带，渔家的神祉叫 “马祖娘娘”，自然也是一位女性。大海上的水手们，面对茫茫星空和海水，每当暴风骤起，排山倒海的巨浪扑将上来，七尺男儿顿时变成无助的婴儿，只能把生命托付给船只，盼她像母亲一样，保护自己平安度过风浪。
这首小诗别具一格，把船只比作一个美丽而任性的女子，就像吉普赛女郎卡门。诗中的文字游戏也妙趣横生。我把这首诗试译如下:
为什么船只被称作“她”？
船只被称作她，因为骚动紧随着她，就像她的裙撑，
手握帆索抢风头的水手，恰如一帮窥测她的束腰的男人。
维护她的容颜需要如此多的油漆，
你要是娶了她，让你破产的只怕不是起初那笔聘礼。
她的美貌，恰如阳光下的甲板。
她桀骜不驯，除非遇上个老练的舵手。
她骄傲地展示上身，却仔细掩藏了下体。
进入港湾那一刻，她毫不犹豫地抛掉旧情人
有趣的是，在船只的命名上，女性、男性、中性名称都很常见。圣经中记载的诺亚的方舟没有特别命名。最早时，古希腊的船只以制造者的名字命名，例如“丹奈斯号(Danais)”和 “阿果号(Argo)”。稍后，古希腊船只往往以神话人物命名，男女都有。十二世纪后航海大行其道，欧洲的船只以女人名命名的比较多，例如发现了美洲的哥伦比亚的船队里的“萍妲号”、“宁娜号”、“圣徒玛利娅号”。英国、法国的商船多以女子为名，但男性、中性的也很普遍。现代海军的船名女性比较少，比如美国的航空母舰有“艾森豪威尔号”、“企业号”、“小鹰号”，不一而足。中国郑和船队的船只命名用的是船老大（船长）的姓氏。
船只的身份是“她”，但“她”又往往有个男子的名字。想一想也不奇怪。女孩子嘛，总是可以随心所欲的。

我想这其中有些符合废名兄提到过的：煤矿工人的阴性指称喜好。
在孤茫茫的大海上，与黑茫茫的煤矿里是有些相通的。另外，美国的
航空母舰更是现代的状况，自有其阴阳平衡。

德语名词有阴阳中三性，所以还不等用代词，前面的定冠词就显示了船只的性别。比如俾斯麦号就是“Die Bismarck”。据说只有法语里面的船只反常规是阳性，如果此说不假，那又怎么解释这个反常呢？ - Re: 涓轰粈涔堣埞鍙绉颁綔鈥滃ス鈥濓紵posted on 06/12/2006

查了一下，法国船只命名跟英国差不多，阴阳都有，基本平分秋色。

是，命名是阴阳平分，可是前面显性的冠词不一样，德语用表示阴性的die，而法语用表示阳性的le 我查到这两个例子：

查到船名名单，大略点了些看看，的确 le 与 la 都有用，不过感觉总体用 le 的多，不过我也没有认真统计，也没有全数点击。加上我也看不懂几个法语单词，还请你再看看。
