True. The over time trend is changing for sure, especially in commercialized society for intellectual property rights. But in 1940 in China, writers can hardly be blamed for copying or borrowing. Drama by Cao Yu or adapting western drama into Chinese ones were common practice.
Secondly, this may not be a complete "progress", and not so great at all, and it just reflects the spirit of "money is evereything". Your cited cases are very good examples to illustrate that point.
Finally, your respect for original ideas is very good and I completely agree. In fact, I often criticize our Chinese culture for not respecting it but only respecting who can memorize more. However, in practice, it is sometimes hard to trace who got the original idea, and with money and fame at stake, many nasty fights and litigations came as a result of it. I could only wish to see less rather than more of this kind of things.
