A genius is someone who can tell you instantly that one plus one equals three; a prodigy takes half a day. ;) - Re: Genius & Prodigyposted on 02/27/2008
That seems too easy. The first day I was taught about decimal points at primary school I told my friends and teacher that one plus one equals three, or to be exact, can equal either 1 or 2 or 3. But I never thouhgt I was a genius.

- posted on 02/28/2008
Greetings!
Yours is interesting but also reveals some opposite view against that of Touche, where you think genius is greater than prodigy. Maybe that is where the confusion comes from. I think context is even more important here, and maybe the two words are not interchangeable and only one can fit one particular situation.

A prodigy is a genius for at least one area/thing and often recognized in their early years of life, and often born with their gifts. Genius is a borader term, can be for people, or ideas, or some acts.
A genius was not necessary a Prodigy. A prodigy may not have geniuous ideas or behave like genius on the area he/she is not gifted at. A prodigy may not grow up to continue being a genius.

From wiki:
A genius is a person of great intelligence, who shows an exceptional natural capacity of intellect, especially as shown in creative and original work. Geniuses always show strong individuality and imagination, and are not only intelligent, but unique and innovative. The term may also be applied to someone who is a polymath, such as Goethe or da Vinci, but a polymath is generally considered a well-rounded genius, gifted in many areas, e.g. math, physics, art, poetry, etc.[1] Einstein, for instance, was a genius in physics, but not necessarily in other areas such as art or literature.

A child prodigy is a child who masters one or more skills or arts at an early age. One generally accepted heuristic for identifying prodigies is: a prodigy is a child, typically younger than 13 years old, who is performing at the level of a highly trained adult in a very demanding field of endeavor. [1] [1] There is some controversy as to at what age and standard to use in the definition of a prodigy.

- posted on 02/28/2008
Etymology:
genius 1390, from L. genius "guardian deity or spirit which watches over each person from birth; spirit, incarnation, wit, talent," from root of gignere "beget, produce" (see kin), from PIE base *gen- "produce." Meaning "person of natural intelligence or talent" first recorded 1649.
prodigy 1494, "sign, portent, something extraordinary from which omens are drawn," from L. prodigium "sign, omen, portent, prodigy," from pro- "forth" + -igium, a suffix or word of unknown origin, perhaps from *agi-, root of aio "I say" (see adage). Meaning "child with exceptional abilities" first recorded 1658.
prodigal c.1450, back-formation from prodigiality (1340), from O.Fr. prodigalite (13c.), from L.L. prodigalitatem (nom. prodigalitas) "wastefulness," from L. prodigus "wasteful," from prodigere "drive away, waste," from pro- "forth" + agere "to drive" (see act). First ref. is to prodigial son, from Vulgate L. filius prodigus (Luke xv.11-32).
看来prodigy和prodigal(浪子)是不同的来源。 - Re: Genius & Prodigyposted on 02/28/2008
Gee, you must be a genius to knock down the lamp walking around。 Oh look at the prodigious dump!。;)

Genius,
- Re: Genius & Prodigyposted on 02/29/2008
Meanings evolve and change.
In their current uses, to say Mozart was a prodigy is a little slight whereas to call Yevgeny Kissin a genius would be a far cry. Swap the accolades then they fit pretty well.
I just checked the dictionary. Lang Zi has nothing to do with prodigy and everything to do with prodigal. - posted on 03/01/2008
Good. It makes sense now. Prodigy refers to extraordinary and outstanding, meaning better and unusual, while genius stress on naturally gained talent or gifted, not something you can study or copy or work on it.

certainly.
