Bloody true!

The Painted Veilposted on 07/14/2008

The Painted Veilposted on 07/15/2008
- posted on 07/15/2008

When I watched the movie, I also felt its sensibility is rather 21st century than Maugham: the wisecracking of the KMT colonel; the main protagonist's enlightened attittude towards cultural colonialism in regarding the French nuns, etc.
I haven't got a chance to read the book yet, but on Wiki the description is quite brutal, including a final sexual encounter between Kitty and Townsend after Walter's death in Townsend's Hong Kong home, at the invitaion of Townsend's wife. Before somebody shouts out "menage-a-trois," I must say it's all very turn-of-the(20th)-century English etiquette in conducting sexual affairs. ;-)
But Maugham is one of my favorite writers. His On Human Bondage is one of only a few Chinese translations I still keep to this day.
Oh, forgot to mention, Wiki says the book has been adapted into movie versions three times. - posted on 07/18/2008

Touche
Que le temps me dure
http://www.answers.com/topic/que-le-temps-me-dure-song-for-voice-piano-2-versions-woo-116?cat=entertainment&nr=1
by Jean-Baptiste Rousseau (1671-1741)
Que le [jour]1 me dure!
Passé loin de toi,
toute la nature
n'est plus rien pour moi.
Le plus vert bocage,
[quand]2 tu n'y viens pas,
n'est qu'un lieu sauvage,
pour moi, sans appas.
Hélas! si je passe
Un jour sans te voir,
Je cherche ta trace
Dans mon désespoir...
Quand je l'ai perdue,
Je reste à pleurer,
Mon âme éperdue
Est près d'expirer.
Le coeur me palpite
Quand j'entends ta voix,
Tout mon sang s'agite
Dès que je te vois;
Ouvres-tu la bouche,
Les cieux vont s'ouvrir...
Si ta main me touche,
Je me sens frémir.

I'm listening to the recording of the book. Will comment on it next week.

Another movie set in China, The White Countess, is a better one IMO. For one thing, I'm a fan of Ralph Fiennes. :)
