chairman is the chairman of CCP
president is the president of PRC (people's republic of China)
Mao was never the president of PRC,
Hu is both the Chairman and president

chairman, n., pl. -men,
1. the presiding officer of a meeting, committee, board, etc.
Mao was, until 1959.

- posted on 08/12/2008
True.
Generally speaking, Chairman runs the Board (CEO etc all Executives are on the board); and the Board runs the Company. Yes, it's unbelievablly true that CEO is only an employee. But in real world, Chairman could well be an employee too in a public company.
Just like in the political establishment, the President or Prime Minister runs the country; and the Chairman runs the Congress or House of Commons which oversees the government on behalf of the people who are legitimate stakeholders of the nation (hard to believe, again). - posted on 08/12/2008

The board does not run the company, the CEO runs the company.
In theory, the board has the oversight of the management (including CEO), but in reality, the board is nominated by the management.
In the past, there were many examples of board members fighting the CEO (HP, Disney), in which the board members lost.

True. It looks like I confused you with Management Board and Shareholders Board etc - there are too many boards in the companies, and sometimes you heard words like Release Board, Delivery Board, and even National Integration Board in a large scale project. :)
CEO etc Management Board runs the compnay. Chairman runs the Board. Does it clarify things or make things even muddier? :)

Roughly true. However, Presiednt should be the legitimate beholder of the company; but CEO only holds the executive accountibility & responsibility.
Put it in other words, if your company screws up something with huge consequence, and after the conviction in court, the company can't identify the individuals who are going to be responsible for it, then the President (if there is one) instead of CEO has to bear the collective responsibility for it. Not good to be a President if you don't know what the CEO is doing. :) UK Public companies don't have too many "Presidents", except ours.
I could be easily wrong here. :) - posted on 08/12/2008

You're easily wrong here.
The purpose of incorporation is to separate the individual from the company's liability. i.e. if a company borrows too much and files for bankruptcy, the CEO/chairman do not need to pay back a nickel.

That's why the Chairman is needed, isn't it? :) Yes, you do have a liability to pay back your personal money if you are convicted. Think of the Enron case.
Actually the law around business liability and company governance is extremely complicated. It could be a case by case conviction, much dependent on your lawyer's capability.

In the case of Enron, the former CEO did go to jail because he was convicted of breaking the law, not because Enron failed. Also he is not responsible for paying back investors.
