- Re: 帝国哀歌posted on 09/26/2008
- posted on 09/26/2008

- posted on 09/29/2008
Let them die! They need to learn how to let go certain things.

Your title suggests that you are pessimistic. The tide is turning and China has the momentum right now, why not move back?
It's funny that when China was poor, we came here for good rush; Now America is facing some diffculty, some of us immediately joined what appeared to be an America-bashing choir. I believe people whose body is low in calcium will forever live a marginalized life, no matter where they live.
Part of the Paulson bail-out plan was borrowed straight from FDR's New Deal play book. Under FDR's initiative the feds also bought up lots of bad assets and mortagages, while provided much-needed capital to keep the market flowing. Serveral years later, after the value of these assets appreciated handsomely, the Feds sold them out and made some profits. Nowadays nobody argues that FDR's approach was anathema to free market economy. In fact, govenment's hand is required in reining the inherent human greed that, if not controlled, can be a destructive force to the market.
I beleive after this painful adjustment, America will still come out on top. Those who do not believe this should revisit the history of the 1930s.

While I share with your view that the United States will eventually overcome the current financial and economic crisis, I also believe the unipolar world as we know it today is quickly disappearing and in its place will be a multipolar world, marked by "the rise of the rest".
I'm of the opinion that unlike some empires in history which declined and eventually fell into oblivion, the American Empire will be more like the British Empire. The imperial influence and control in the world may no longer be as far reaching as what they used to be, and may even eventually peter out, but the empire will not fall into ruins. For instance, London is still one of the greatest financial centers in the world and the British pound still a strong currency. Similarly, Paris and Berlin are still shining cities of the world. In a future world that is quickly being made, in the incoming "post-American" world, Washington will no longer enjoy the glory it is enjoying today. The glory of economic, geopolitical and technological powers will be shared by many other powers, including China, India, and some other Latin American countries.
This, in my view, is a very possible scenario, no matter how much we love or hate America. America will be here to stay, but its heydays are simply over.
