Identity Crisis

Impact of stereotyping on Asian American students from “Adolescents at school” by Michael sadowski

Third, fourth generation asian Americans find that they are not seen as authentic Americans. 。。。。 asian American are assumed to be foreign unless proven otherwise.
Given the tremendous power of the The perpetual foreigner stereotype in school and society, many asian American youth have internalzed the belief that they are not real American.
2. Model minority stereotype:
Unlike many stereotypes, the Model minority stereotype seems at first to be positive and even flattering. A close examination of this stereotype, however, reveal its damaging effects both for asian Americans and for other people of the color. Teachers commonly evaluate asian American students to the standards of model minority and place pressure on students.
On the other hand some asian American students resist the Model minority stereotype entirely, unfortunately, these young men often believe they must resist the school in order to appear manly and not being uncool.

The evolution of identity is particularly challenging for the children of immigrants who are born into the relative cultural homogeneity of the midwestern United States. For instance, such second-generation adolescent and young adult Chinese Americans experience two culturally discontinuous environments on a daily basis--a Chinese home context and a largely Occidental American school context.
Cultural Identity Development
fourfold model of identity configurations that arise during the socialization process.
1.In one configuration, termed separation, the individual emphasizes the ethnic culture and has little or no contact with dominant culture.
2.A second form is an integrated individual, one who retains ethnic cultural values and maintains contact with the larger society.
3.Third, a person with an assimilated identity seeks approval from members of the dominant group and differentiates from the ethnic group.
4.Fourth, one with a marginalized identity feels alienated from and unidentified with both their ethnic and the dominant culture.
Sue and Sue (2002) offered a somewhat more dynamic perspective in their ordered typology of the developing intercultural identity. Their five-stage model provides a map of the general pattern by which identity develops among Asian Americans.
1. Initially, minority identity is characterized by conformity, as individuals feel it necessary to admire, respect, and emulate White culture.
2. In the second stage, dissonance, Asian Americans sense that not all aspects of majority culture are desirable, nor are all aspects of their minority culture undesirable. They may wonder, "Why should I feel ashamed of who and what I am?"
3.In the third stage, resistance and immersion, Asian Americans resist the dominant culture and become more involved in the practices of their own ethnic groups, feeling guilty about rejecting their ethnicities in the earlier stages.
4.In the fourth stage, introspection, Asian Americans wonder whether personal acceptance of White cultural values makes them sellouts to their own culture.
5.In the fifth and final stage, integrative awareness, Asian Americans' identity becomes rooted in an inner sense of security and appreciation of the unique aspects of both the ethnic and the mainstream cultures.
Sue and Sue's (2002) final stage of identity developmental is quite similar to Berry, Kim, Power, Young, and Bujaki's (1989) conception of integrative identity or bicultural orientation. This kind of identity traverses given cultural boundaries in that the individual is no longer confined by one group's interests; rather the person sees her- or himself as a part of a larger whole that includes both groups.
Identity as Dynamic, Situated, Social Construction
In contrast to the idea that identity is a relatively stable, coherent configuration of psychological content and behavioral patterns, Kim (2001) proposed a more dynamic view in a stress-adaptation-growth model of the underlying social-psychological processes of an ethnic minority's identity transformation. Kim (1988, 1995, 2001) asserted that adaptation in the new environment is not a process in which new cultural elements are simply added to prior internal conditions. Rather, as long as host conformity pressure exists, ethnic minorities must stop embracing the old cultural system and start learning the new one. Therefore, people experience cultural identity as dynamic psychological movement involving trade-offs among various group identities that at times may merge into a single selfhood (Kim, 2001). For example, in a study of Oklahoma Indians, Kim, Lujan, and Dixon (1998) found a preponderance of integrative identity mixed with varying degrees of separatist orientation. Moreover, they found that, usually, Oklahoma Indians situated themselves along a cultural-intercultural identity continuum.
Ting-Toomey (1993) developed yet another model that is highly relevant to understanding the dynamics of cultural identity. It is particularly important because it recognizes the role of communication in what is theorized as an identity negotiation process. Ting-Toomey argued that novel and unpredictable communication contexts create identity insecurity but also provide opportunities for individuals to negotiate their identity. According to this theory, people want to reinforce existential security and sustain an unencumbered sense of self. But novel and unfamiliar encounters often create identity insecurity. This requires people to engage in an identity negotiation process. In other words, through the process of identity negotiation in novel situations, one shapes anxiety-provoking encounters into identity-strengthening experiences (Ting-Toomey, 1993). In this perspective, identity security-vulnerability is considered the primary dialectic of human existence. Moreover, Ting-Toomey holds that an individual's identity evolves, stabilizes, and develops through communication episodes.

It takes a great personality and self-awareness to bridge the differences between cultures, languages and personalities. I'm glad that my son began to make sense (and use) of his confusing experiences in this country.

有一天看病空隙,我们谈得开心, 另一年长的医生突然问道“ can you guys tell the difference among yourself? I can hardly tell you guys apart, even thought I knew you are different besides Caoye’s accent“ 这就是亚裔所受到的The perpetual foreigner stereotype 的实例。
还有两个Hispanic的医生小伙一个叫Jose, 一个Hector他们在UCLA医学院时就是朋友, 当我和他们谈如何替孩子选学校时(那时象祥林嫂,看谁逮谁谈儿子以解不在儿子身边的亏疚感, 不知道有café啊) Jose看着我半开玩笑得说“no matter what you do, children always end up hate their parent’s choice”。

第二代能够将Chinese作为“something extra”不是也挺好,至于这extra dose of heritage in their life有多重,看他们自己的造化,说到底,跟其它美国人没有太大差别。
了,她說:“We Chinese are so lucky right?”我诧然问她为什么,她答曰“because we've got Chinese New Year”。

- posted on 11/24/2008

同意st dude的分析, identity的根源就来自于human impulse to categorize and labeling people in a way that restrit the expression of complex identities.

- posted on 11/24/2008
I think the discussion on this line is meaningful.
I hope all the immigrants' family doctors be like rzp's doctor to advocate for children's cultural identity formation.
All youngsters will have to deal with "identity crisis" (that's Erikson's idea) but adolescents from immigrant families or bi-racial families will have to deal with an added identity crisis: ethnic or racial or cultural identity sooner or later.
William Cross studied black identity formation and later many more studied cultural identity formation among other ethnic groups.
Any moment there will be four types of cultural identity statuses depending on how much they identify with the majority (A) or minority (B) cultures:
bicultural (A+B)/assimilation (A>B) /separation (A < B ) /marginal (A? B?---your American friends think you're too Chinese and your Chinese friends think you're too American)
Parents do not have to worry or feel heartache about children's identity crisis. What we can do is to help them see the cultural elements (Chinese/American) that exist in their life and see that they eventually accept their bicultural identity.

了,她說:“We Chinese are so lucky right?”我诧然问她为什么,她答曰“because we've got Chinese New Year”。

- Re: Identity Crisis , all kindsposted on 11/25/2008

Susan,

Take it easy.

Actually, "identity crisis" is not limited to children of Chinese families in the states. Rebellion against their own cultural heritage is common to all second generation immigrants regardless which corners of the world their parents come from, as shown by numerous studies. The reason is very simple: Children want to be like other children. I suppose this is a survival instinct. - posted on 11/25/2008

The second generations rebel against their parents so consequently they rebel against their parents' cultural heritage; the third generations rebel against their parents, and one way to rebel is to identify with (or at least learn about) the cultural heritage that their parents threw away。
- posted on 11/25/2008

http://www.pbs.org/becomingamerican/ap_pjourneys_transcript5.html ILL MOYERS: I can sense that you're wresting with the questions and the information because you just didn't grow up steeped in that culture. It's unusual that you were not at home made as aware of your Chinese heritage as a lot of others whom I've been interviewing who said they were.
MAYA LIN: My brother is absolutely more attuned to it than me. I think it's partly my nature. My mother would say, "You do know, you just forget."
MAYA LIN: I had a really hard time with my identity. I wanted to fit in; I wanted to be American, and for the first 20 years of my life — I remember when I was at Yale I was recruited by the Asian American Society, ASA, and I was so uncomfortable. I was foreign in that group.
If you think about it I was the only Chinese American growing up so I looked out at everyone and everyone is white. So, what would make me more uncomfortable was hanging out with a group of Chinese Americans. And I knew that this was bad, like what is wrong with you, you're Chinese American? And I remember just politely declining becoming part of ASA at the time. And it's taken me my next 20 years to really understand.
And what is ironic is my work is inspired as much by an eastern sensibility coming from my father and probably my mother. It's there but I've only recently become really aware of how in a strange way it percolated up. I think identity quietly percolated up. My father-- everything we lived with at home he made — most of the pots we ate off of, a lot of the furniture. He was a master craftsman — the joinery, the detailing was very clean — it was modern.
It was the 50's modernism, but it was also — in it's simplicity, in the shapes, in the colors — he was brought up in China so that whole aesthetic. I went to his childhood home in Fukien and it was very Japanese based. I was sort of stunned because I've always felt my aesthetic is almost at times closer to the Japanese sensibility than the Chinese sensibility. At a certain point the temple architecture in China-- and I think is more of the Baroque period -- is very flourished, and I prefer this very minimal, simple look.

我儿子就拒绝承担这样的role,总是提醒我:mom, I'm just a kid. Mom, I would have done that too if it were legal in this country.

有一天, 他突然说:maybe I should get a private lesson to get my skill up a notch..

apa=美国精神病学会?
I always thought it was 美国 xin li xue 学会, psychology, not psychiatrics (the one that needs medical training, dealing with patients). It's true they are almost like identical twins but still different: apa: American Psychiatric Association or apa: American Psychological Association.
you are right, IC is not just a female thing. it's more common and general, it's for everyone--"只要是活在地球上, 谁也逃不掉". the one who proposed this idea is a male (Erikson, who probably went through an IC himself, being a blond guy in the neighborhood of dark haired jewish kids) and he meant for everyone, male and female.
Those who say they don't have IC probably had it without realizing it, as it would occur during adolescence, when the kid has to deal with the dramatic changes that come along with a growth spurt and sexual maturation so that they have to ask themselve "who am I"--what I will be, what I will do in my life etc. and when they would value their peer's opinions more than their parents'.
I am a teacher (my identity?) and I often use Maya Lin's story to illustrate the case of assimilation in cultural identity status. I would ask my class if they ever had this question of "who am I?" at all and if so when. most of the class would raise their hands and they tell me it's around 12-16 when they self-questioned. A few would say they are still asking this question and occasionally one or two would say they never had this question.
Identity could break down to more dimentions: occupation identity (what job am I going to do for living), gender identity, and ideology identity (political, religious beliefs etc.), and social identity (if you happen to be one of the majority group you may not sense that).
James Marcia extended Erikson's idea by proposing a grid of identity statuses depending on whether an exploration and commitment were made:
identity achieved (did exploring and made commitment); moratorium (still exploring, no commitment); foreclosure (made commitment without exploration); and difussion (neither). There is a discussion about girls might have an easier time with IC as someone's daughter (I don't remember whose) did not seem to have crisis--I guess it's not time yet or she is in diffusion status. I don't think girls would have an easier time with identity crisis.

付上Jhumpa lahiri 的关于她自己come to turn with her identity的采访录:http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=97418330 "For me," Lahiri tells Morning Edition's Steve Inskeep, "there is sort of a half-way feeling [of being American]."
But, she says, her parents never thought of themselves as American, despite the fact that they applied for and received citizenship.
"They've lived here now for more than half of their lives, and they raised a family here and now have grandchildren here. ... It has become their home," says Lahiri. "But at the same time, for my parents, I don't think either of them will ever consciously think, 'I am an American.' "
Lahiri says her parents were always isolated from mainstream American culture. Despite the fact that they spoke English, they were "betrayed by their accents." If the family went to buy a washing machine, the sales clerk would talk to Lahiri, assuming her parents couldn't understand.
"The accent, the fact that my mother wore traditional clothing — that marked them immediately as soon as we went out in the public sphere," says Lahiri.
Growing up, Lahiri's loyalty to her parents conflicted with her desire to fit in: "It didn't matter that I wore clothes from Sears; I was still different. I looked different. My name was different," she says. "I wanted to pull away from the things that marked my parents as being different."
Lahiri says her parents didn't mix with her friends' parents in an easy, comfortable way — not because they didn't want to, but because there was a barrier that they couldn't overcome.
"I think this was a two-way street," she says. "It wasn't just that they were afraid or unwilling — there was a fear, an unwillingness on both sides."
Lahiri says creating characters who also struggle with the immigrant experience has helped her confront the truth of her life.
"A lot of my upbringing was about denying or fretting or evading," she says. But through fiction, Lahiri says she's learned to accept that her parents will always be tied to two different parts of the Earth.
"It has been liberating and brought me some peace to just confront that truth, if not to be able to solve it or answer it," she says.

2.children who are humanistically oriented are likely to have more IC than technologically oriented one.

Thank you caoye and sands for your professional, and responsible input on this topic. The thread has become very informative and helpful for me.
Caoye, I did watch the youtube pieces last night, it was hilarious. The boy is pretty cool. What stage of IC he is in, charged by his videos?
"Riviving Ophelia" by Mary Pipher was handed to me as a "bible" and must-read when I sent my 3-year old daughter to Trinity Preschool in New York City, by the director of the school. The director also strongly suggested out little girl will go better in an all girl school. I was little lost at the time by those directions from her. I did not send my daighter to girl school, and I am still reading the book today.
The book does not address IC issue specially, but it does talk about identity issue for minority girls. Growing up as members of minority groups intensifies girls' identity struggles in adolescence. In their cases, the book says, "it shaprended the issues and helped them discover who they were. Because of race, they are different from their peers. When they were young, they suffered from people who judged them because of their race. If they survived, they learned to consider the source and discount such judgments, and eventually developed the inner resources to deal with it.
In order to keep their true selves and grow into healthy adults, girls need love from family and friends, meaningful work, respect, challenges and physical and psychological safety. They need identities based on talents or interests rather than appearance, popularity or sexuality. They need good habits for coping with stress, self-nutruring skills and a sense of purpose and perspective. They need quiet places and times. They need to feel that they are part of something larger than their own lives and that they are emotionally connected to a whole.

Perhaps because no man is an island, like John Donne put it. People need to co-exist in the world with their fellow human beings?
谢sands答疑。但我觉co-exist和identify还是不一样,大家可以co-exist甚至于相互依赖但可以不互相identify,for instance, human and animals。 - posted on 12/03/2008
Crisis则是这个探索过程暫时的困惑和不稳定导致的,因为多数人的心理无法乘受一种不确定不稳定的个人identity for too long,会去over identify with 被乘认的群体,或detach from it。
But there is more to it.

caoye: Thanks for the comforting words!
It happens quite often and I must learn to take it easy.
To comment on pepper's son's teacher and 浮生's thoughts on the difference of "co-existing and identify": identity somehow is formed through interactions with others,
it relies on (1) self-perception, (2) the self in others' perception, and (3) your understanding of how other people perceive you. Therefore this "other people" is actually an indispensable element in one's self concept (more concrete) or identity (more abstract).
Take pepper's son for example. His self-concept is established upon his experiences of interacting with people around him. His parents and sibling love him, then he believes he must be worth their love--he becomes confident and shows his smarts with math; his teacher thinks he is smart but shy--he probably will be quite proud of his smartness, and whether he will internalize his teacher's view about his shyness will have to depend on his various school experiences with peers and other school personnel--say, if he feels comfortable being quiet in school, perhaps he indeed continues to present his shyness in school but if with encouragement from supportive friends and/or other teachers he could shed out his shy shells and come out to be an outgoing person just like when he's home where he is at ease.
So that's what I meant with John Donne's "no man is an island". You can't live without other people (of course, occasionally we have Robinson Crusoe and Henry David Thoreau). To make life simple (parsimony prinsiple?), we find a group we identify with (called reference group), so that we can compare notes with group members when encountering uncertain situations (much like religious people would do in situations of uncertainty: they pray).
caoye, you are right to cite Freud in talking about identity.
After all, Erikson is a Freudian disciple (of Anna Freud, who recruited him to be an art teacher to the school she ran for children of her psychoanalytic patients, when Erikson was a street artist, living on sketching portraits for tourists in Europe after graduating high school and having declined his parents' request to go to university to become a medical doctor just like his stepfather).
Throughout life, tension arise between the desires for individuality and for connection. Some cultures emphasize connection over individuality (such as China in the past), while other cultures put individuality ahead of connection.
But all societies have to deal with both aspects of the ego: the "I" as agent, originator, and executive of one's individual thoughts and actions, and the "we" as agent, originator, and executive of collective, cooperative enterprises that preserve and further the survival of the group.
Newman and Newman (2001) gave this Erikson crisis of identity vs. role confusion a new name: the conflict between group identity vs. alienation. Young people ask themselves: "Who am I, and with whom do I belong?" They evaluate the nature of their ties to immediate and extended family members, and they begin to understand the unique characteristics of their racial, ethnic, cultural, an sexual identities.

Ha, I noticed my "identity" is modified somewhat (sands->sandsd?) I tried to edit but it won't work, perhaps I will have to accept this variation.
Come back on stereotypes. Yes, increasing contact is a good way to reduce stereotype (cognition) and prejudice (attitude). I find a program called "mix it up at lunch" at teaching tolerance website: http://www.tolerance.org/teens/about.jsp. Middle schoolers and high schoolers are invited to sit with people other than their usual cliques or "lunch buddies" during lunch time for that day.
Adolescents are usually self-absorbed (due to the task for searching for their identity, perhaps) and may not be particularly nice to out groups, although they may be warm and friendly to their "in-group". A former student told me her story when she relocated from VA to NY in 8th grade: as a new comer she was shunned and pushed/tripped with food tray in cafeteria and she was an caucasion, not even a minority.

坚持自我更多的是satisfy pleasure,与群体认同更多的是appease one's fear (fear to be alone, to be without protection)。
这样想来在意别人对自己的stereotyping完全是自寻烦恼嘛:) - Re: Identity Crisis , all kinds 异乡人posted on 12/04/2008

文学艺术:?how that contribute to national identity crisis?

Sands,
谢谢那个"mix it up at lunch"的网站, 我会向儿子的校长推荐。
Can you comment on that?
Artist to psychologist, very interesting。

Wow, this is such a tall order--talking about Freud's ego and its cousin in general public, career counselling etc.... I just feel short of breath reading it! Actually short in 2 folds: in time, as term papers piled in on the desk and in expertise (feel Freud too complicated for me, and I know very little about evolutionary psychology--but I do have a book on evolutionary psy--some publisher sent to me, which means I did not have the initiative to get it, and little motivation to read it so...) although I do teach developmental psy courses, mostly child, adolescent, and a recent teaching assignment is aging which is again a struggle for me.
This cafe is full of good writers and I really enjoy your writings! Like reading Fusheng's writing of her understanding of identity issues and I feel clarified all of sudden by a view that's different from my own (which is delightful!).
I think this format of discussion with questions and attempted answers is quite good, perhaps it should continue with your new questions?
And I am glad you also like "teaching tolerance" website! They do have some good ideas there!
--Erikson的故事?His is an interesting one! I will try when I have time, but again I am not good at storytelling...

梦冉 must have some hard time imagining not everyone over here has such an easy access to Chinese language software like she does.
Besides, Mayacafe claims its goal "一个融合华文、英文和双语,提供一个文化驿站,含诗、散文、小说、咖啡", bilingual is its very element of identity and we "coffeebeans" are just that: bilingual people who live in a non-Chinese country but able to use Chinese. My identity is a person who speaks Chinese but lives in an English environment; I use Chinese wherever/whenever I can, but when it's hard to use Chinese, I use English and know that others could understand. We expect our children to grow up adopting a bicultural identity and right now, we have that bi-cultural identity: we have both Chinese and English as our languages and we embrace our lives in China (past or present or both) and in USA or Canada or UK (present).
Bilingual children are very good at code-switching, actually, they don't mix up the two. And they may always find ways to get their ideas across to others. So thank you, 梦冉, for your concern, but don't worry!
(haha, almost used Palin's line: thanks, but no thanks)

This americanism is a reminder of the Dutch colonists who founded New york City. In those days a master workman who supervised apprentices was called baas, the Dutch word for "master". Baas was turned into Boss which soon came in common use.
Althought in 1838 the novelist J. Fenimore cooper expressed himself as incensed that such a barbaric word as boss had come in to vulgarized our language. He also objected to belittle, to adocate, to oppose, and wrote to Noah Webster for help to put down these cheap slang terms. Guess what, Now we use these words everydays without knowing their past.
