- posted on 12/16/2008

Perhaps something like this:
Loose Notes From Idle Reading
or
Loose Pages
- Trivial Comments on Idle Books

I thought about Ilde Words for Idle Books, but Idle often means lazy, so it's a problem.
I do like 8 ye's title, it does sounds very English style :-) Just change Idle to Random such as
Loose Notes From Random(Trivial ) Reading

Yes, random is a good word.
I miss you too. Been traveling in China.

That's interesting.
Other ideas so far considered include:
Rambles with Books
Walks with Books
Imperfect Reading
The Book of the Day
Books and Thoughts
Thoughts from Books
Please comment on or suggest alternative. Many thanks.

Random Notes from a Connoisseur's Leisure Reading?

Ha, that's interesting. This whole afternoon I was talking with a group of American friends and they all lectured me on the principle of the simpler the better. Basically they argue that adjetives are weakening rather than strengthening the word that it modyfies. The only word came in mind is Musing(?), something like Musing Thoughts from Readings. Anyway, modifications seldomly dropped on the table there. I wonder if this is a cultural difference between British and American or between Chinese and American.

- posted on 04/12/2009
Right. That's why you can't use words like "witty". And that's why I like Imperfect Reading once. But the problem with understatement is that it is perfect for "somebody" but not so for a nobody. You need to be a giant to play the trick of understatement, otherwise you are not big enough to downplay. That's why I hesitate there.

I wonder if there is any writer in the group. I don't see there is the difference between culture, let see some example: (these are books on my table now)
Thirty years in a red house....the most exciting word here is RED, I can't image to get rid of this RED.
End Point...without End, the title is nothing at all.
The Overcrowded Barracoon and Other Articles (V.S. Naipaul)
India: A Wounded Civilization (V.S. Naipaul)
The Book of Lost Books (Stuart Kelly)
The only words catch my eyes are Overcrowded and Wounded, and Lost..

It also has been suggested that a subtitle may help expand a simple title. In that spirit, can we say
Books and Thoughts: Trivial Comments from a Connoisseur’s Idle Readings - Re: 【书单】朱小棣<<闲书闲话集>>posted on 04/12/2009
If we restrict ourselves from using a subtitle, this one might work. Given July's point on adjectives, shall we add one here such as "humble"?
Humble Reflections on my casual readings
Or:
Humble Thoughts from Casual Readings

Just a Thought
How about that?
我到书店一般只翻翻这样的书:don't read this, don't waste your time! 或者:whatever, i don't give a damn.
Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.
just thought of this name, but someone already used it before.

Hahaha...
Perhaps due to the same spirit, my son thinks that "The Book of the Day" is an ok title.
But given Maya's comments on me and July's point that a punching word is required, now I tend to entitle it: Least Words for My Leisure Readings. How's that sound?

看来,这儿子的确需要玛雅的单独辅导 :-)"The Book of the Day" is the worst title in the list, 听起来象那些心灵鸡汤 :-)

That's because I proposed Book du Jour to him. And he didn't give too much a damn about it and just reponded with that, with "ok" not even "OK". That's kind of the casual siprit Maya refers to, I guess.

How about "Least Words"? Did that work? For aliteration, I used Leisure.
