tar's idea of having a separate English forum is a good one if maya really wants to attract people who don't know Chinese. We can gain valuable insights and perspectives from exchanges with these people. Besides, tar will have a place to indulge in his linguistic acrobatics and so will Linghu learn to write one or two minimally respectable English sentence after all these years of snugging in Queen Mother's groin. We all can benefit.

we should cast votes on this, then i will set it up soon, within a month.... - Re: Cafe Internationalposted on 07/07/2009
linhu said " he is not A gay", which confused me quite a bit.
Normally, "gay" is an adjective in mordern english. So people in english-spoken country would more likely say "he is not gay" instead of " he is not A gay".
So what happened to linhu? - Re: Cafe Internationalposted on 07/07/2009
Maya, you don't really need to poll anyone. As in the immortal words of Kevin Costner, if you build, they will come. ;-)
Just imagine if you go to a website with everybody using a totally foreign language, even if soembody is writing part of it in English, you will never feel comfortable to join a discussion.

You mean english-speaking country, I suppose? :-) - Re: Maya Cafe Internationalposted on 07/22/2009
Be patient, i am building it up, we will have it soon, very soon..... - Re: Maya Cafe Internationalposted on 07/22/2009
咖啡不仅应有国际版,还应有和谐版,斗争版。或称文版武版也行。文武之道,一张一弛。 - Re: Maya Cafe Internationalposted on 07/22/2009
大师版也是要的。

你大约是只知其一,不知其二。
gay 可以是adjective, 也可以是 noun, especially “a homosexual male”,所以, “He is not a gay" 并没有错。

虽然gay 可以是adjective, 也可以是 noun. 但是约定俗成, 在表达同性恋的意思时, gay是adjective.

Oh, yeah?
I did a search of site:Time.com gays and got these:
Gays in the Military: Does a Sailor's Murder Signal Deeper Problems?
On Agenda, Gays Ask, but Obama's Not Telling
...
What you are saying is that these nouns don't mean 同性恋 in these examples?

"A gay" / "Gays" are pretty much offensive words. So if 约定俗成 still works for you, just avoid using gay as a noun.
If you found it was too hard to believe what you were not ready to believe, give it up. I don't want to make you feel uncomfortable. OK?
That is all I can say. I will leave you alone on this topic. No more from me.
Good luck, buddy.

你知道,并非我要挑你的刺,是你把令狐说对的东西硬说成错,路见不平而已。
所有的对话都在,大家一看就明白。
我知道如何如何用 gay。 问题是当你试图教训别人的时候,别把别人说对的东西硬说成错,那是误人子弟,懂不懂?
如果你一开始就说“He is not A Gay" 语法上并没有错,情形就不一样了。

- Re: Cafe Internationalposted on 07/30/2009
Technically all posts in the International can be listed in the main forum, but marked as such. Then most people can still join the discussions from the main, then people who don't read Chinese can feel more comfortable starting from there.
