On Lap 1 of the 1964 race, Dave MacDonald skidded into the northwest inside retaining wall and Eddie Sachs slid into him. Both cars exploded. Sachs was killed at the scene and MacDonald later died died of injuries. - Re: History of Indy 500posted on 08/03/2009
