American Footballposted on 11/03/2009
American Footballposted on 11/03/2009
American Footballposted on 11/03/2009

To a sports fanatic, not only beauty is in the eye of beholder, it's never even something registered in his brain. Some of them do behave bizarrely- like many fans in cold weather cities would bare their chests in freezing weather. The closest I can think of a parallel is some trailer park trash watching daytime soup opera. To outsiders it's incomprehensible, but both have drama and suspense and violence, plus the athletes they have far juicier sexual dalliances in their private lives that are far more gripping than the story lines Hollywood writers can come up with.
Now the game iteslf has many levels of enjoyment. To a casual fan just watching couple of three hundred pounders hitting and knocking the shit out of each other can be cathartic in relieving whatever stress in his private life. And then a smaller guy (called Running Back) heroically carries the ball running into a human wall repeatedly, it can be a metaphor for persistence and resilience. Occasionally the ball is thrown in the air and a player called Wide Receiver would jump and twist in the air with all the grace of a Bolshoi ballet dancer, try to bring down the fast projectile, this is no less a miracle that these guys routinely perform.
Then the coaches would match wit in devising different strategies to foil each others moves. There's no other game that coaching plays such a direct role in determining the result. In any single offensive play, it packs four or five options that the whole offensive team has to execute accurately, or otherwise it is busted and the ball doesn't get advanced. Similarly the defense also buries 3 or 4 counter measures and unleashes it in reaction to what the offense is doing. To say it's a chess match is a little exaggeration, but it's definitely more of a mental confrontation than meets the eye.
Fianlly, it's frankly better than anything else on the tube. ;-)

American Footballposted on 11/04/2009
- posted on 11/07/2009
The beauty of American Football (and of sports in a larger sense)
The institutions of sport generate a civil religion. Sports flow outward into action from a deep natural impulse that has much religious quality: an impulse of freedom, respect for ritual limits, a zest for symbolic meaning, and a longing for perfection. The athlete may of course be papan, but sports are natural religions.
These are many ways to express this impulse: by the asceticism and dedication of preparation; by a sense of respect of the mysteries of one's own body and soul, and for powers not in one's own control; by a sense of awe for the place and time of competition; by a sense of fate; by a felt sense of comradeship an destiny; by a sense of participation in the rhythms and tides of nature itself.
Sports are "manifestations of concern, of will and intellect and passion". In fidelity to that concern, one submits oneself to great bodily dangers, even to he danger of death. (Symbolically, to lose is also a kind of death). (The Joy of Sports, M. Novak).
