老方, 老K 都是专家, 两位的翻译理念各有不同, 老方偏意译, 老K直译
意译和直译都各有所长, 各有所短, 尤其是诗歌翻译, 两种方法都很难做到完美, 意译往往丢掉他原作的风格, 直译又会失去他的文化内涵, 两者都需要外加补充地, 拙见

翻译的不是英诗,是中国古诗的英文译本,回译成中文。

没有啊,我只是google“卧闻”+“钟”,再扫两下就出来了。应该是这个吧。
你看这最后两句的英译完全不对头。老廖老方你们会怎么翻译?

To follow the form of the original translation, a kind of sonnet, I would render those lines to:
I know that all is but empty.
In vain one would indulge oneself

Shu Dai and Lao Liao's translations are much closer to the origional, but I think we are not quite there yet. The direct concern of the author was the sound of the bell: if the sound doesn't exist in the first place, how could it possibly rise and cease?
I think he was contemplating something equivalent to the question: "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" :) - posted on 05/12/2010

At night I hear in bed the temple bell
More audible in the mountain's quietude
Frosty wind doth blow a cold moon well
The beauty that rises in the big void
Loud and clear I hear the first sound
Followed by the second resonating
Hearing it, I feel as if it could be found
Yet its invisibility defies my searching
Now I know the emptiness of being
Life and death come to mean nothing

这第一句实在不是好诗,10个字里用了三个夜字。各涩。老方写得好。后两句该流传:

老方的意思更近了。佛教里空的本质之一是“不生不灭”,既然不生不灭就没啥好想
的,不仅是“想了也没用”。生在这里更靠近"birth", "beginning"的意思,和"death"
, "ending"相对应。
