回复 风子Shanghai is a nice city 30 years ago. But now it is full of corruptions and lies. Disgusting

shang·hai (shng-h, shngh)
tr.v. shang·haied, shang·hai·ing, shang·hais
1. To kidnap (a man) for compulsory service aboard a ship, especially after drugging him.
2. To induce or compel (someone) to do something, especially by fraud or force: We were shanghaied into buying worthless

Thanks for your thoughts and comments. I agree that not every period in the history of Shanghai is the same: some are better than others, depending on whom we ask; that Shanghai has a checkered history, some of which isn't that glorious; and that attractions featured only in a guidebook may not necessarily make a fair representation of the city as a whole.
Given the size, history and convoluted social makeup of Shanghai, I wonder if it's even possible to use one or a one set of photos to undisputably represent the city, in the same way people often pick the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of New York.

风子好照片,外滩是上海的外套,里弄是上海的内衣。
按现在时髦的穿法,好像内衣都派不上用场了:)

Haha, I really like this tie vs. bra analogy (although it was modified slightly :) and your pithy observation!!
BTW, I actually understand perfectly Shanghai dialect as long as it doesn't involve vernaculars coined after the 1990s. I am familiar with the narrow streets and back alleys in that city, as depicted in your photo. Unfortunately I don't particularly like them. Unlike those cute, often cobbled, winding streets in Europe, many back streets in Shanghai are not nearly as clean or walkable. Of course we don't have to mention the common household item that unifies all Li-Nong communities: the toilet with "Chinese characteristics."
