I think going to the field is not as tricky as the work itself, just find a good J-school and study there. After you get a degree, if you are lucky, you can land a job in a good news orgnaization, even though, sometimes, you have to start in the field of PR or marketing.
I know quite a few first generation immigrants who successfully work for the main stream western media, some of them(young women) even went to cover the war in Iraq. But don't have too much illusion about the job, it is tough, hard to survive for new grads, and sometimes, you have to deal with routines as you deal with other jobs.but if you love to travel and write, like to talk to people, potentially, you can get yourself trained and become journalist.
