《我的名字是红》的作者，土耳其作家ORHAN PAMUK不久前出版了一本自传《Istanbul:Memories and the City》，鉴于作家当下炙手可热，他的作品自然洛阳纸贵，备受追捧，所以迅速出了英文版和中文版。

从何时起向往土耳其这个国家，我已毫无印象，大致是从我很小的时候读那些童话故事开始的。连环画上，戴着面纱，露着肚皮的妖娆女郎，圆顶尖塔的清真寺，背叛的爱情，复仇……如此遥远的记忆，在我看来，这个国家，也始终是蒙着面纱的，来来往往的君主们，卷起尘沙漫漫的大军、金戈铁马的统治，他们的名字，他们的面孔，他们的血统，他们的文化，错综复杂，各领风骚几百年，却铸造了一个多元化，既属于东方，也属于西方，既在亚洲，也在欧洲，身份最不确定，神秘莫测的土耳其。

它对我是个谜，一个我期望着亲身去探解的谜，因此，我没有兴趣去读《我的名字是红》，倒是毫不犹豫买下英文版的《伊斯坦布尔》。一个土生土长的伊斯坦布尔市民，来自大家族的当代作家ORHAN PAMUK，他笔下的城市和这座古老城市里的生态，他记忆中的家庭，他的父母，他的童年，他的成长，他曾经历过的点点滴滴……也许能让我在别人的旅途照片以及干涩的历史叙述外，窥视到伊斯坦布尔和她的人民更深入的真实。一个人的命运肯定与哺乳了他的城市的命运互相勾结，他的气质，他的个性，他的倾向融合了它的气质，它的个性，它的倾向。

大多数翻译的书都不好看，特别是那些像时令水果般，迫不及待进入市场的。我漫不经心的翻看着《伊斯坦布尔》，铺张的文字，描述作者童年时的生活，他关系冷漠的父母，吵吵闹闹的亲戚，西式布置的客厅，一个随着经济衰退也家道中落的家族的琐碎庸俗的生活，这喋喋不休的叙述，无关城市，而是一个家庭的变迁，它的内部与外在。生活如此平淡，连同它的文字也有点沉闷枯燥，我一边读，一边心里犯嘀咕：是翻译影响了文字的感觉，还是原文就如此？终于，当作者絮絮叨叨他与兄长，夏天的时候，随心情不好的母亲到Bosphorus海边散步时，我的耐性终于丧失无几了，而此时秋天去土耳其旅行的念头也摇摇欲坠，我干脆把书扔一边，啃另外一本《瓦尔登湖》了。

《瓦尔登湖》作为经典作品，闻名已久，却不曾预料其行文之艰涩，思绪之飘忽，风格之简约，仅一篇《经济篇》已让我仿佛老马车偏遇泥泞路，磕磕碰碰，寸步难行，梭罗天马行空的思路让我难以追随，即使是徐迟的中文译本，也常有文意不连贯之病，费人思量。经典既难读，土行之念死灰复燃，无奈，《伊斯坦布尔》卷土重来，随我左右，聊作消遣。

不曾想，经《瓦尔登湖》一番苦功后再读《伊斯坦布尔》，仿若曾攀爬过乞力马扎罗的人登本地梧桐，视如小菜。而且，在前者的对照之下，竟也有几分可爱了，原来轻慢的心渐消失，决定细心去体会在这淡淡的文字背后，作者的感情。

一旦用心，感性细腻的好文字便接踵而来，仿佛，我本来就身在宝山，只因鼠目寸光，无法察觉本来无处不在的宝石。例如，第十章的《Huzun》就写得很深邃动人，作者从语义，语源来分析这个与英语melancholy的意思大致相当的词汇的最微妙的含义，引经据典，外加哲学家，精神医生等人的理论来阐释伊斯坦布尔，这座城市无处不在的忧郁气质以及它的由来与成因。

在ORHAN PAMUK眼内，他的伊斯坦布尔是如此忧郁的：

To feel this huzun is to see the scenes, evoke the memories, in which the city itself becomes the very illustration, the very essence, of huzun. I am speaking of the evenings when the sun sets early, of the fathers under the streetlamps in the back streets returning home carrying plastic bags. Of the old Bosphorus ferries moored to deserted stations in the middle of winter, where sleepy sailors scrub the decks,pail in hand and one eye on the black-and-white television in the distance; of the old booksellers who lurch from one financial crisis to the next and then wait shivering all day for a customer to appear,of the barbers who complain that men don’t shave as much after an economic crisis; of the children who play ball between the cars on cobblestoned streets; of the covered women who stand at remote bus stops clutching plastic shopping bags and speak to no one as they wait for the bus that never arrives;of the empty boathouses of the old Bosphorus villas;of the teahouses packed to the rafters with unemployed men; of the patient pimps striding up and down the city’s greatest square on summer evenings in search of one last drunken tourist; of the broken seesaws in empty parks; of ship horns booming through the fog;of the wooden buildings whose every board creaked even whey they were pashas’ mansions,all the more now that they have become municipal headquarters;……of the tens of thousands of identical apartment house entrances, their facades discolored by dirt, rust, soot,and dust;……of the tiny ribbons of smoke rising from the single chimney of a hundred-year-old mansion on the coldest day of the year;……of the city cemeteries, which seem like gateways to a second world, and of their cypress trees;……of everything being broken,worn out, past its prime; of the storks flying south from the Balkans and northern and western Europe as autumn nears, gazing down over the entire city as they waft over the Bosphorus and the islands of the Sea of Marmara; of the crowds of men smoking cigarettes after the national soccer matches, which during my childhood never failed to end in abject defeat: I speak of them all.

整整五页，Pamuk以他早熟的，洞明的，多愁善感的视觉，捕捉五十年代、帝国的光荣已化烟雨、陷入经济危机之低潮的伊斯坦布尔的表象和内在的零碎光影，让我们看到一个沦落的时代下，步履蹒跚，暮气沉沉的伊斯坦布尔种种面貌，这种失意，这种无望，凝聚成一个时代的气质–忧郁，而这种情绪销蚀一切，成为一切事物的共有特征，不仅体现在日常生活上，还蕴藉在当时的文学艺术里。

自从八十年代推行自由开放的经济政策后，土耳其的经济发展迅速，势头良好，根据那些旅游归来的人所言，伊斯坦布尔物价不菲，挥金如土。显然，这座城市今非昔比，作者笔下的伊斯坦布尔，已是城市遥远的记忆了，生活此间的人们，还有多少感受到，见证过，那与我们国家七八十年代的大城市颇有几分相似的，曾经日暮西山的伊斯坦布尔？

无论如何，只要我想到，当我来到伊斯坦布尔，看到它此时此刻的模样时，那个过去的它并不会因此抵消，而是因了这些优美的文字，永远存留我的记忆里，仿佛Orhan Pamuk的记忆已被移植，我的心，便为之倾倒。
