我倒并不反对把北京弄成建筑实验场，美国现在也是没有整体规划，私人拥有土地，这是必然的结果。
想不太清楚这个问题。

所困扰。在这个最好的也是最混乱的时代，让彼此对立的权威人士们重复他们的观点并不困难，难的是你必须去面对一种无法克服的无奈——没人会相信通过这些地标性建筑以及紧随其后反反复复的纷争就能把我们这个时代带入“美丽新世界”。
见识过无数对城市变化的赞赏与攻击之后，你会发现，看到的、听到的，甚至那些停工下来重新进行理性论证的工程，都无法给你足够的信心去描绘这座城市的蓝图。是建筑艺术与商业利益的有机结合，还是个人偏好与艺术规律的微妙平衡，你似乎永远不清楚究竟是什么力量决定着这座城市未来的面貌，而只能调整出某种心态，一同欣赏这“想起一出是一出的即兴演出”。

建筑本来就也是种“微妙的平衡”，或说动态的平衡，跟政治和商业利益能有什么区别。干嘛非要使它本身变得崇高起来？这种从建筑上创造和传递历史的冲动，野心太大。今非昔比，如今技术的力量，将建筑早已降为普通工程的档次。有巨大实用性的巨型工程，将会不断出现，比如横渡大西洋和太平洋的真空弹头地铁，悬浮吊挂在海平面100米下，列车以7倍音速运行。相对于建筑的地平线，人类自己将变得越来越渺小。好在北京大半原来就没有什么风格，人民大会堂本身就是个摆设，它在中国历史上起过什么历史性的作用？几乎想不起一件来。李鹏89年会见绝食代表团，大概是唯一一次人民大会堂直接跟人民打交道。笑话一样。前边已经有了个毛泽东墓，再建个更大的押蛋扣在旁边，也没什么大不了的。
伦敦建千年馆耗资几亿，建了有小十年。好不容易赶在两千年前开张，等钟声想过之后，人们才开始想当初为啥要搞个千年馆来着？众说纷纭，莫衷一是。朝野两党吵了又吵，因为里面有不少纳税人的钱。后来光维持维修费每年三百万英镑，可只能纳税人掏钱了。只好关张了事。拍卖了很久了，也不知最后谁要当这个冤大头。建筑美学上讲，基本就是个长毛的鸭蛋，只不过出土比北京鸭蛋跟高一些，所以跟丑陋一些而已。
这些建筑，即不非凡，也不普通。将来即不会代表这个时代的技术和文化，也不会反映普通人们的生活方式。不会在历史上有任何地位，建不建都无关紧要。 - posted on 01/03/2004

The "historical value" of an architectural project, by the mere definition, should be left for history and later generations to decide. The architect should not rest his justification on that ground, for the same reason one can not get a loan by declaring a lottery ticket, potentially worth millions of dollars, as part of his assets. The Great Wall was not built to be viewed by the satellite camera from the outer space; nor was the Hanging Gardens of Babylon designed to be on the list of the World Wonders thousands of years later. Instead, they were created for national defense and royal entertainment; the practical value at that time constituted the principal, if not the sole, consideration. In the current situation, whether the enormous cost involved may justify the purported benefits really begs the question.
In my very biased view, shaped by my observations of the government officials, most people behind the project probably have very limited vision and intelligence. One big possible motivation for them to push the project through is to associate their names--since they put their two cents into and the approval stamps on the project--with the building. They are certainly hoping that the project is of great historical value so that people may say, generations from now, “Mr. Egg Head was the ‘chief engineer’ of the project, just like Qing Shi Huang Di was on top of the Great Wall.” Well, I guess I digressed. I shouldn’t have second-guessed these people who may have good intention to put a big Egg out in Beijing so that modern democracy may be hatched out of it. The Egg actually is a symbol of China’s productivity and prosperity, since the contour of China is like a chicken. To that extent, the Egg certainly has historical significance way above that of any fossilized dinosaur eggs ever unearthed. Even if it may eventually be destroyed by time, scrambled eggs are still better than no eggs.
