Just finished reading Chapter one, I like it. But it may a bit too heavy for many readers. Is it anxiety ? It seems like real suffering.
One has to wonder why should one take such a great deal of suffering ?
Why ? For what ? - Re: 《焦虑年代》 第二章 霍普医生的诊所posted on 04/04/2004

I have deep doubts in the attempts to gain happiness from romantic passion. Though admirable, the effort will have to be fruitless, for no romantic love can be a lasting source of security and fulfillment. On the other hand, if one is engaged in any intellectual/artisitic pursuit or serious interest, he/she will find loneliness not an unwelcome thing, in fact, it can even become an individual sanctuary. When I travel in the great minds of the past, in the art, music, poetry, philosophy they have created, I am a happy and content person. I will not try to let my loneliness overwhelmed by any illusionary love, and I won't utter any frustration that to rid of loneliness is hopeless, for I don't want my loneliness, or solitude, be ridded of.
The reason for me to mention Schopenhauer is because that he saw the "ravine" between people can be erased if we see others' sufferings are exactly like our own, the compassion grows here and goes beyond. In this sense, no one is alone and most people's loneliness is simply a matter of illusionary feeling. That's why I keep quoting Russell's saying "the essence of wisdom is the emancipation from here and now."
Furthermore, when share the thoughts and feelings of others in books, music, poetry ... when get to know more about nature, I feel I am connected to the world and myself part of an universal life. How can I feel lonely anymore? If we say the will to seek comfort and love from others' company is the underlying force to make our society sustainable, we might as well say that the will to truly enjoy art, and better yet, to creat art, is the driving force to keep human spiritual tradition alive and flourishing.
BTW, in my opinion, dealing with the topic of loneliness is not philosophy's main theme, what philosophers have been trying to answer for the past few thousand years can be best put in Gauguin's three questions in his famous painting: Where did we come from? What are we? Where are we going to? And I am sure we are still trying to answer these questions for the time to come, no matter how much and how sadly we feel that there might never be any answers. - posted on 04/20/2004

I'm not sure why Maya post her chapters in her cafe. If she seriously consider writing this as a novel for publication, she shouldn't post it on web for free, and I look forward to it in its book form in bookstores. If it is meant to be an exercise for writing fictions, here I may contribute my 2 cents of comments.
I saw some previous comments and dialogues on these chapters, such as pop vs. serious literature. I don't think Maya's problem or difficulty here is not to know how to write in a more popular style. Her other writings prove she knows how to generate public interest.
It is my opinion that one of the selling points of an autobiographic novel is that the author is still unknown, and if it is successful, the author will become popular overnight and readers would demand to know more about the true story of the author. Popular novels during the 60s in China are all in this nature, such as "Song of Youth", etc.
If the writer is already relatively well-known to readers, an autobiographic novel usually does not work, and the writer has to know how to fictionalize the stories and cut off all the traces that reader can link back to its author. For a well-established author or scholar, it is really hard to create such an autobiographic novel. Take Lu Xun for example, his "madman's diary" and "Ah Q" already won him a big name, and therefore he could not write in the style of "Dreams in Red Chamber" anymore. When readers already know so much about the author, it makes it funny to read something that so easily link the author's true experience to what now is being fictionized. It appears very unnatural.
For a writer who already establish his or her reputation, the challenge is to know how to fictionalize (Xu Gou), so that no one would easily get a feeling that this is a true story. When the writer is unknown, likeness to a true story makes the fiction more plausible. When the writer is too well-known, likeness to a true story hurts the artistic value of the work.
Maybe this is just my problem, and at least those who have never heard of Maya may not have this problem. But again, that would come back to my initial question: why did Maya post it in her cafe, since all the readers here are her fans already. In that case, she should just keep on writing until it is published as a book. - posted on 04/22/2004
