In ancient times, people stole light through the cracks on the walls of an illuminated house. Some of them even dug or enlarged an opening to adjust brightness. These people were lauded, for more than two thousand years, obviously not for their intentional damage of others property or invasion of privacy (an ear close to the bedroom wall, aided by prying eyes, always serves to remove the last veil of privileged family life), but for their assiduity.
Now we have this Information-Age form of stealing-light-by-awling-the-wall: one merrily surfs cyberspace for free through our neighbors internet highway. I wonder for how many more millenniums that will meet the approval of the society. ^_*
What is fascinating here is that unlike its predecessors, the new light-borrower, so to speak, doesnt have make a hole or physically modify, no matter how slightly, his neighbors property, in order to enjoy the free service, hence at least on the surface and to that extent, there is no infringement upon their property right. However, a claim can similarly be made on the ground of privacy invasion. An unguarded house is not an open invitation to the world. A free-ride without the knowledge and consent of the fee-paying subscriber substantially increases the risk of compromising the his private information at home. In addition, fairness bars a bystander from being the reaper and beneficiary of a fruit-bearing field, tended to and labored upon by its property owner. Where law may fail to address a wrong, equity can always supply a remedy.
But I dont want to make the joke too long for fear itll lose its flavor. :) - Re: 戒网难posted on 10/12/2005
Wouldn't stealing others bandwidth make their internet speed much slower?
I keep close watch on any suspicious car in the neighborhood. :-)
One of the biggest identity theft was commited by two technology savvy thieves who parked outside the home improvement store Lowes and read its wireless signals. Hundreds of thousands of customer credit card information were stolen through the air. - Re: 戒网难posted on 10/12/2005
