闲来无事， 读一本跟中国有关的垃圾书（Ruth Rendell: Speaker of Mandarin). 说垃圾书， 就是指那种看完就扔的大众纸皮书， 而且是捡来的。想到玛雅咖啡关于 Yiyun Li 的那个贴， 就特别留神一下外国人写书的时候有那些表达方式是中国人用英文写作的时候可能想不到的， 顺手划下来。 当然， 中国人学了这些以后， 可以用在自己的英文写作中。看书无非就是上英语课。
这里列举若干， 附上中文， 及如果是中国人写的话， 可能怎么写：
1。 by each door of the train stood a girl attendant in grey uniform.
老中会说：female attendant
2. The restaurant car would open at eight. 餐车 dining car
3. After a while he went out into the corridor to establish the whereabouts of lavatory and bathroom 去看看厕所在什么地方 to find out where the lavatory and bathroom were
4. could you be even more of an agel and find out how to suppress that bloody radio? 你能不能好人做到底， 看看能不能关掉那个讨厌的收音机 could you be so kind as to.... annoying radio
5. It was dyed hair, greyish-brown at the roots after five weeks away from a hairdresser. 距离上一次做头发已经过了五个星期了 five weeks after the last hairdressing
6. the dark blue trouser suit she wore unsexed her 使她看起来不象女人 made her look like a man
7. Outside the window a few feeble clusters of light showed. 窗外出现了一片片微弱的灯光 weak lights
8.Lois hadn't noticed his absence and had gone on in the wake of the others. 跟着别人走了 had gone on following the others
9.Wexford stood a moment by the window, trying to make out some indication of the terrain in the darkness. 辨认出夜色中的田野 （地形) trying to distinguish the terrain
10. The train ran on through impenetrable darkness, through a dark that showed no demarcation between land and sky and which was punctured by not a single light. 火车在深沉的夜色中行进。 夜色深浓得使人分不出哪里是天和哪里是地。 夜空中没有一点光亮。 The train ran on through thick darkeness, so dark that one could not tell the sky from the earth. There was no light in the darkness.
没有英语文学造诣的中国人写的英文可以是合乎语法的， 句子可以是自然流畅的，但是文字的难易程度可能就在大学低年级泛读课所选教材的水平， 或者说是简化英语读物的水平。 即使是简化英语读物， 比如国内出过的那种瘦长本， 也有些表达方式是中国人根本想不到的 （不是学不来的）。
我教泛读的时候， 一种练习就是勾出这些比较生动的， 独特的， 具象的， 体现英语本族语作家思维习惯的表达方式让学生翻译， 或者 paraphrase， 以检查其理解。 但是如果是从教写作的角度出发， 则还应该要学生模仿。
中国人要在英语国家进行英语写作， 不应该仅仅限于提供外国人感兴趣的故事上， 还应该在英语语言上下功夫，力求使自己的作品读起来象是本族语作家写的给有文学修养的读者看的那种文字。
关于中国人的英语写作， 我们要区别几种情况： 一种是把中文的惯用语和比喻直接翻译成英文， 在不违反英语语法的情况下， 的确可以起到丰富英语的作用。 这正像翻译文学丰富了汉语一样。就是汉语中的陈词滥调，传过去以后也成了新鲜的表达方式。
第二种情况是句子合乎英语语法，但是句型基本上是汉语的句子的翻版。 这样的英语，无可厚非，但是如果停留在这个水平上也不应提倡。我们知道，汉语多流水句，以动词使用见长， 而英语多枝干句，以名词使用见长。这样的差异反映了中文使用者和英文使用者的思维差异。中国人的英语写作当然可以有一些中国英语 （现在英语已经有了世界各国变体，中国英语并不是坏事）的特点，但是一点也不学习英语的优势表达也不应提倡。例如长句，汉语就是借助了翻译文学而引进的，在语言学界已经得到公认的肯定。如果写汉语尚且如此，写英语就更不应该仅仅停留在制造汉语句子的英语翻版上了。
这里的例子还属于那种英语课可以学到手的表达方式。

方兄点的地方都很好，很受益。原则上是需要不断学习的。
很多地方是非背诵不可。最近读乔伊斯的《一个青年艺术学的画像》
，那是一流的语言，当然也有些艰涩。。。

老方，中国人(不模仿就）写不出来的英语不等于就是好英文哪。你这例句里面我看不少是垃圾英语。此其一。
你要中国人跟以英文为母语的比英文？吃饱着撑的？此其二。
有本事的，拿出东西来就可以了。是故事还是语言好，Who cares? 此其三。
我明白你是靠语言吃饭的，所以有这等好笑念头是可以理解的。此其四。:)

据我的错看，咖啡店里是很有几位可以用英文写作的。如果写，GADFLY的其二其三大概可以帮助找找“买点”。
语言的鲜活，不就是靠不断地融入新， 更新， 更更新，更更。。。更新吗
我就经常为中英文意象上的差别而激动，即便还未越过文法上的障碍，也不影响我的迷恋。

"中国人(不模仿就）写不出来的英语" this kind of showbiz title is only used by Sun or Daily Mirror, however, let's not forget Sun got a page 3 topless beauty for the readers --- what do you get for us, Dear Mr Fang? :)

"中国人(不模仿就）写不出来的英语" this kind of showbiz title is only used by Sun or Daily Mirror, however, let's not forget Sun got a page 3 topless beauty for the readers --- what do you get for us, Dear Mr Fang? :)
