Former Enron CEO Skilling gets 24 years
Convicted of fraud, disgraced executive insisted on innocence
David J. Phillip / AP
Former Enron CEO Jeff Skilling, right, arrives at federal court in Houston with his attorney Daniel Petrocelli for his sentencing hearing Monday.
Enrons former chief financial officer pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit securities fraud on Jan. 14, 2004.. The plea calls for him to serve a 10-year prison term and help prosecutors in their investigations of other Enron executives. Under the deal, numerous other counts against Fastow will be dismissed if he fulfills the terms of the plea agreement, including forfeiting $23.8 million of his assets. Prosecutors had accused Fastow of making millions of dollars through elaborate partnerships he created at the expense of the company and its shareholders. Fastow, who holds an MBA from Northwestern, joined Enron in 1990 and became a close associate of CEO Jeffrey Skilling, who named him CFO. Fastow is credited with setting up the off-the-books partnerships that benefited Enron by hiding debt and inflating revenue. He was dismissed from the company on Oct. 24, 2001. He received a lighter sentence of six years on Sept. 26, 2006.
HOUSTON - Former Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling, the most vilified figure from the most notorious financial scandal of the decade, was sentenced Monday to 24 years, four months in prison, the harshest sentence yet in the case that came to symbolize corporate fraud in America.
He was the last top former official to be punished for the accounting tricks and shady business deals that led to the loss of thousands of jobs, more than $60 billion in Enron stock and more than $2 billion in employee pension plans when Enron collapsed.
Skilling, 52, stood alone at his sentencing before U.S. District Judge Sim Lake; his co-defendant, Enron founder Kenneth Lay, died July 5 and his convictions were vacated last week.

Craig Rennie, an assitant professor of finance, studied 229 firms that laid off employees at least once between 1993 and 1999. What he found was the governing boards of those companies rewarded their CEOs for making the tough decision to let employee go.
For the year after a layoff occurred, CEOs of those firms received 22.8 percent more in total pay (cash plus bonus and stock-based compensation that includes restricted stock grants, options and long-term incentive pay) than did the CEOs of firms that did not have layoffs.
Cash compensation dipped an average 6.5 percent for CEOs of layoff firms the year before the layoffs occurred. But CEOs of layoff firms received 19.6 percent more stock-based compensation than CEOs of non-layoff firms the year of the layoffs. One year after the layffs, CEOs of firms that laid off employees received 42.6 percent more stock-based compensation than CEOs of non-layoff firms. That percentage rose to only 44.9 two years after the layoffs. But beyond that two-year period, it jumped to 77.4 percent.
What does it mean?
Our results were consistent with the view that layoffs create shareholder value Rennie said. Layoffs are followed by an increase in operating income and a decrease in expenses. Not surprisingly, investors like increases in income and decrease in expenses, the study found, generating abnormal stock returns immediately after the announcements.

It's a fact that the senior management of US corporation have been paid more and more independent of their performance, while the ordinary employees have suffered from benifit cuts, layoffs, pension cut, and other "cost-cuting" measures.
Eg. The chief technology officer of my company was pushed out after wasting $1 billions on a failed project, but she was among the five highest paid employees even in the year she was pushed out.
Now even some people from Wall Street are beginning talk about the excess of CEO pay.
Hope China will not copy the US compensation system.
