This doesnt make sense to me. Could you make it a little bit more clearly to help me udnerstand? If you are the 2nd generation which is the group of people you are reffering to and I am assuming you are from this group, why and how do you have language problem with English-speaking mainstream American? If you are 1st gernation of oversea chinese, you should not have language problem in Chinese. The bottom line is, you should have no language problem at least with either group of people in term of language speaking.
But, I do undersdtand your central point: the 2nd generation american chinese is neither true chinese nor true american. However in your opinion, this is identity crisis, becasue you are kind losing whom you are.
In my opinion, there is no identity crisis in the sense of culture. You eat hambuger at lunch and Peking duck at dinner. This is who you are (in cluture), a mixed tasty mouth and a more tolerant stomach. This is not identity crisis. You should not be bothered by that.
There is indeed identity crisis in the sense of politics (international ) when you try to identify your or your parents' nationalities and patriotism.

I would like to make the issue simpler in order to understand. I may lose some accuracy due to simplification, but my purpose is to make points.
When their biggest annual holiday celebration is Christmas, and you celebrate your biggest holiday in Chinese spring festival, they are in mainstream, you're in subculture (non-mainstream)
When their main daily communication language is English and English-based media, entertainments and arts are primary part of their daily life, and all of yours are Chinese based; they are mainstream and you are subculture.
When (if) they have 10 friends to socialize, 6 of them are whites, 2 are blacks 1 Latino and 1 Asian, they are mainstream. When (if) you have 10 friends to socialize, all of them are Chinese, you are subculture.
When they watch football and baseball, you watch soccer, they are mainstream, you are subculture.
I can go on and on...to list at least 10 more cases to answer what is mainstream and what is not.
Mainstream can cause pressure on non-mainstream people and force individuals to change in order to conform to mainstream. Clearly, Mr. felt this pressure. he is not happy for this change/adaptation. I am sure many people, like him, feel this kind pressure too. But I also know some people like to make change if necessary, like to reinvent themselves if possible.
