Portrait of Lytton Strachey by Dora Carrington
Quotes
Dora Carrington: My dearest Lytton, There is a great deal to say, and I feel very incompetent to write it today. You see, I knew there was nothing really to hope for from you, well, ever since the beginning. All these years, I have known all along that my life with you was limited. Lytton, you're the only person who I ever had an all-absorbing passion for. I shall never have another. I couldn't, now. I had one of the most self-abasing loves that a person can have. It's too much of a strain to be quite alone here, waiting to see you, or craning my nose and eyes out of the top window at 44, Gordon Square to see if you were coming down the street. Ralph said you were nervous lest I'd feel I have some sort of claim on you, and that all your friends wondered how you could have stood me so long, as I didn't understand a word of literature. That was wrong. For nobody, I think, could have loved the Ballards, Donne, and Macaulay's Essays and, best of all, Lytton's Essays, as much as I. You never knew, or never will know, the very big and devastating love I had for you. How I adored every hair, every curl of your beard. Just thinking of you now makes me cry so I can't see this paper. Once you said to me - that Wednesday afternoon in the sitting room - you loved me as a friend. Could you tell it to me again. Yours, Carrington.
Lytton Strachey: My dearest and best, Do you know how difficult I find it to express my feelings, either in letters or talk ? Do you really want me to tell you that I love you as a friend ? But of course that is absurd. And you do know very well that I love you as something more than a friend, you angelic creature, whose goodness has made me happy for years. Your letter made me cry. I feel a poor, old, miserable creature. If there was a chance that your decision meant that I should somehow or other lose you, I don't think I could bear it. You and Ralph and our life at Tidmarsh are what I care for most in the world. - Re: 推荐电影 Carringtonposted on 04/15/2007
The Unbearable Lightness of Being,虽然都是小资,但是不一样的事和方式。 Carringtonposted on 04/15/2007
I love you, but not your body!
But I am my body!

Lucy,
The Bloomsbury group is a bunch of most fascinating people with their talent, of course, and their sexual relationship, which is so weird that people may still be shocked, at least I am, by their stories so many years later. If you read a little more about this group, you will find there are a few “ménage a trios” in the group: Strachey, Carrington, and her husband (whom both Carrington and Strachey loved) form one (as shown in the movie), and Vanessa Bell (Virginia Woolf’s sister), her lover Duncan Grant (both are painters), and his male lover form another. To make the relations among these people even more bizar, on top of these two triangles, there is one more person, the well known economist Maynard Keynes (凯恩斯),who was the common homosexual lover of both Strachey and Grant at the same time, forming a third triangle on top of the previous two! BTW, I visited Woolf's house and her syster's house in Sussex a few months ago. They are only a few miles apart, separated by river Ouse in which Woolf drowned herself.
While homosexuality is pretty commonly accepted at present, it was definitely not in the 20’s and 30’s of last century (remember Alan Turing was persecuted for his homosexuality in UK even in the 50’s). On top of that, these people were involved in complicated love/sex networks involving both homo- and bisexuality. Compared to these, Virginia Woolf’s bisexuality is not even worth mentioning anymore.
These people were certainly avant-garde in their time in terms of their sexuality as well as their art. The interesting thing is, some 70 years later, they can still be considered avant-garde even by today’s standard. I think these people deserve to be studied carefully not only in term of their art and literature, but also their psychology as well. One interesting question is, whether one would feel the same kind of Jealousy toward one's lover's homosexual partner, a question I asked in this forum quite some time ago.
Coming back to the movie, I think Emma Thompson’s performance is great, but I really like Jonathan Pryce’s performance much more. He portrayed this guy Strachey so wonderfully, he is witty, funny, and talented all at the same time. He won some prize at the Cannes movie festival for his role in this movie.
I am reading some books about this group. Again, very fascinating people! Lucy, I think if you don't view the movie as a love story, you will enjoy it more.
鹿希, in what aspects do you think The Unbearable Lightness of Being is similar to Carrington? There is a lot of politics in the former, while the latter is mostly art for art's sake, except Strachey's "conscientious objection" to the war. - Re: 推荐电影 Carringtonposted on 04/15/2007
Carrington's husband Ralph Partridge married Frances, a good friend of Strachey's sister, after Carrington's suicide. Frances Partirdge might be a latecomer of the group but she lived the longest. She published some of her diaries in her later years, which were superbly written. - Re: 推荐电影 Carringtonposted on 04/15/2007
Yes, they form a complicated graph for sure, but not quite a clique in the strict sense yet. :-)
Oh, yes, I forgot to mention, Grant's homosexual lover later married the daughter of Grant and Vanessa Bell, twenty some years his junior (not a big deal these days.)
浮生, thanks for recommending the book. Just found it at Amazon, twenty some bulks, pretty pricy! :-) I am reading a book by Vanessa Bell's son, telling the stories of these people.

- posted on 04/15/2007

This is a good point, these people are mostly from the upper class, concerned with mostly their art and their love. I chatted with a colleague, a math professor with a PhD from Manchester university. He didn't think much of this group, as he is from a working class background, his mother spent quite a few years as a cook assistant in a rich family before she got married. So the English have a much stronger sense of class than Americans, even to this day.

Pay more attention to Carrington and Strachey. The performance is simply first class.

zt: her ashes were scattered under an elm just beyond the garden of Monks House.
The plaque which her husband, Leonard, raised to her memory is now inside the garden. It has a quotation from her novel 'The Waves':
