At some point Chinese alchemists felt that it would make it much easier to receive state grants to fund projects relating to elixir, panacea and immortality pills if they used arcane symbols shrouded in the mysterious western letters and numbers instead of the simple set of the traditional Chinese characters and icons. That may be the start of modern Chemistry in China, along with the abstruse translations of many of the chemical terms, some of which are still in use today.
