In the movie "You Got Mail", Tom Hanks was in Meg Ryan's bookstore with a little girl and a little boy, whom Meg mistook as his kids. After being told one was his father's son, the other was his grandfather's daughter, Meg asked, what kind of family is this? Tom answered, we are ... an American family! ;) - Re: 今年的感恩节:不健全的美国家庭 Thanksgiving with Dysfunctional American Familiesposted on 11/27/2007

Hey,
I want to say hello to Maya here. Haven't heard from her for a while.
Regarding your point about Chinese big family, I think the difference is that the American one or broken one has too many in-laws and ex-s and that's really a killer. I have a huge Chinese family for grandparents generation (20 of them on mother's side alone) and I have no trouble in knowing who is who. But it is really confusing to understand all the relations in your "broken" American family. My first instince is to suggest that you write a detective or crime story using that family structure. You only need a little bit more on love and hatred plus some financial interest to cook a good pot of plot.

How is this a killer? How can it be, when compared to the opposite? If you come to think of it, this phenomena actually says a lot about the healthier relationship between the "Exes", which, unlike in a traditional Chinese relationship, people do not take a bad marriage too personal and do not extend the negative effects to the kids as much.
... But it is really confusing to understand all the relations in your "broken" American family.
Family? Broken? It depends on what your definition of family is. Nuclear family is THE FAMILY. You marry the person you love, not necessarily his/her extended families, though, they are part of the package.

No the Chinese style divorce would be much more dramatic, and entertaining.

Killer refers to the difficulty in understanding and remembering all the relationship.
Broken family comes from the origianl title.
The complication of relational structure warranties a good detective story because it allows you to suspect almost anyone and because readers can hardly remember the relaionship so well and exactly, so it allows the author to make up something and hide it and then connect all the dots later.

Dysfunctional does not equal to broken, if that's what you meant.
IMHO, there are different schools of thriller writers. I don't particularly like this approach you suggested though it might work as well, that is, if you are after the gratification of perplexing the readers without actually giving them the real stuff. I've seen successful writers working hard on anything but this.

I used "broken" with a quotation mark simply because I'm lazy and don't want to speall out the big word.
The other point by Moab is well taken, i.e. an experienced author would try to avoid such a methodology, which for a beginner seems a good way to start. That's exactly my suggestion for her to try as her debut.
Since you have such an ease to describe the complicated relationship I think you are gifted to write puzzling detective stories.
