A Poem
Published by the Washington Post
When we were the Sick Man of Asia, We were called The Yellow peril.
When we are billed to be the next Superpower, we are called The Threat.
When we closed our doors, you smuggled drugs to open markets.
When we embrace Free Trade, You blame us for taking away your jobs.
When we were falling apart, You marched in your troops and wanted your fair share.
When we tried to put the broken pieces back together again, Free Tibet you screamed, It Was an Invasion!
When tried Communism, you hated us for being Communist.
When we embrace Capitalism, you hate us for being Capitalist.
When we have a billion people, you said we were destroying the planet.
When we tried limiting our numbers, you said we abused human rights.
When we were poor, you thought we were dogs.
When we loan you cash, you blame us for your national debts.
When we build our industries, you call us Polluters.
When we sell you goods, you blame us for global warming.
When we buy oil, you call it exploitation and genocide.
When you go to war for oil, you call it liberation.
When we were lost in chaos and rampage, you demanded rules of law.
When we uphold law and order against violence, you call it violating human rights.
When we were silent, you said you wanted us to have free speech.
When we are silent no more, you say we are brainwashed-xenophobics.
Why do you hate us so much, we asked.
No, you answered, we don't hate you.
We don't hate you either,
But, do you understand us?
Of course we do, you said,
We have AFP, CNN and BBC's...
What do you really want from us?
Think hard first, then answer...
Because you only get so many chances.
Enough is Enough, Enough Hypocrisy for This One World.
We want One World, One Dream, and Peace on Earth.
This Big Blue Earth is Big Enough for all of Us.

Thanks for posting. I like this piece and admire his courage...
This also illustrates the attitudes and mentality of westerners who crave for challenge and love for fighting. They have been fighting with themselves for centuries. Now they find a new enemy as China rises up gradually.
Looked at all the sports (football, baseball, Olympic Games…) they have created and the enthusiastic fans… I’m often amazed by our coworkers in the office for their energy and enthusiasm as they watch, talk, organize events and fight for their own teams…

Right on! Brother Lin! It's about time the West (esp. the Western media) be told how hypocritical they have been to China and other so called non-First World countries---perhaps to cover up their own shortcomings (Iraq, may be?) ??! Yellow Power all the way! You guys ain't seen nothing yet! When 1.3 billions people got their acts together...Lordy Lord!!! Just you wait and see...don't have to wait long! - Re: A POEM TO THE WEST by Duo-Liang Linposted on 04/29/2008
Is this really published in Washington Post? Why NYT refers to it as something posted online? Hope it gets some attention it deserves among non-Chinese readers. One big problem about the recent events is that it was only hot among Chinese or Tibetans maybe. Did anyone else really care? - Re: A POEM TO THE WEST by Duo-Liang Linposted on 04/30/2008
I read the post every day. I don't think I ever saw it. I had searched the author's name on the post's web site. Nothing turned out.
This is not much a poem but it does highlight West's ambivalent attitudes, to say the least, towards China. - posted on 04/30/2008
According to http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/print_476f3a70010090zk.html, Prof Lin himself denied he is the author.
YouTube has a video of this poem attributed to "“a silent, silent Chinese". That is what NYT did. Apparently Times reporter did the homework.
However I rather view this round of "fight" as a dialog. So what are messages from each party? How are all sides communicating? Do your audiences understand you?
