Arrest of Henry Louis Gates Brings Charges of Profiling
Cambridge police arrested Henry Louis Gates Jr., a Harvard University professor who is one of the leading figures in African-American studies, outside his home on disorderly conduct charges Thursday in an incident some see as racial profiling, The Boston Globe reported. According to the police, someone walking saw Gates trying to get into his own home without a key. (Gates has said that his door was jammed.) When police arrived and questioned Gates, the police report characterizes him as argumentative, while friends who have spoken to Gates said that he did cooperate, and that a white professor outside his own home would never have been treated in the same way. “It’s unbelievable,’’ Lawrence Bobo, a Harvard sociologist who visited Gates at the police station Thursday and drove him home, told the Globe. “I felt as if I were in some kind of surreal moment, like ‘The Twilight Zone.’ I was mortified.... This is a humiliating thing and a pretty profound violation of the kind of trust we all take for granted.’" The Root published a statement on behalf of Gates, in which his lawyer describes how Gates says he cooperated and was still arrested at his own home.

The scenario can be easily played out as follows:
Two police officers walk toward a black man who's trying to pry open the lock of the front door in a nice neighborhood.
"Hello sir, can we help you?" one officer calls out.
"The door been jammed and I can't get in," the man grumbles.
"Step back and show us some IDs please."
"What? This is my house and I don't have to show nobody no stinking ID," the man is visibly agitated.
"Sir, you have to stop trying to break in the house and prove to us that you are the owner of this house."
"No, this is my property and you are trespassing. If you don't leave me alone and I gone have my lawyer sue your fat ass off..."
....
(As they say, the rest is history.)

If it's a white absentminded professor, this is how it will unfold:
"Good afternoon sir. What seems to be the trouble?"
"Good afternoon officers. The door is jammed and I can't open it."
"Here, maybe if you will step back and let me try it...here we go. There is some rust in the lock and you just need to jiggle the key a little bit."
"Thanks so much officers. Do you wanna come in and have some beer?"
"No sir, We are still on duty. Have a nice day."

stupid police, but they do not care about compensating for the professor, since the money comes out of tax payers.
The police might have said:" ok it is your home. We will wait and see. It is turns out not to be your home, we will arrest you for burglary".
