2. 道德
3. 价值
4. 艺术
5. 文化

There are time honored values that are black and white: you don't murder, you don't rape, you don't steal. It will be intersting to see if you can describe a scenario (or threshold) in which you endorse these acts.
There are other ideas and standards that are transitory - the zeitgeist of an era. Owning slaves used to be a society norm, so was discrimination against women and minority. I would have no problem putting them in the category of relative morality.

Abee said we should not argue, but let's do it anyway. :-)
In many primitive tribes thousands of years ago, human sacrifice was very popular, which was all justified and accepted as the right thing to do, therefore not immoral, for the sake of, say, saving the entire tribe from some terrible natural disaster, But in today's standard, human sacrifice is not much different from murder.
Rape is a different beast altogether. Just a few days ago some people here were discussing the possible pleasure on the woman's part in a rape, if I am not mistaken. Potentially a woman could enjoy the sex part of it but later claim it was a rape for money.
Stealing, lying (especially "white lie"), etc., could even be less black-and-white...
Again, as always, everything boils down to the definition...

Sacrifice is like capital punishment, or for that matter sending soldiers to die in a battle ground. But these are the acts of a sovereign on behalf of a society or a tribe. It's morality is far from absolute.
Don't confuse it with murder or rape, they are individual's sins. By the way, describing rape being enjoyable is disgusting. Rape is not about sex, it's about power and violence. And if you think women should enjoy violence committed upon them, you should be contemplating whether you can enjoy being raped in a prison setting.

Hah! no need to lecture on me about what rape is. I do NOT think whatever you think I may think. Putting words in others mouth is a common trick but hardly effective. I didn't put anything in your mouth. You quote someone in your argument, and you didn't say which part you agree or which part you don't (presumably?). But you can't say you don't agree with something and then use exactly the same thing to argue your point.
Your problem is always wanting to get the best of both sides. It doesn't work in a serious debate.

It's a continuous process between different people, different societies, in constantly shifting circumstances, and as such, it can never be absolute.

What's your opinion on evolution? - posted on 10/03/2009
I don't disagree with the idea that if there are wide swath of disagreement in defining moral standards between different cultures and societies, or even within one society, consensus can be reached through negotiation and compromise. And then there are moral values that are changing throughout times, as the ones I mentioned in my first reply to gz.
However, there are rules that you can find in any society or culture, throughout ages, in universal agreement, that every member of such society shall abide by. My list of murder, rape, and stealing is pretty uncontroversial, so I thought. Now you can find any mitigating circumstances to excuse, or exclude certain actions from the list. BUt if you question the list itself being part of the basic moral standard of all civilizations, then it's an extraordinary new discovery for which the burden of proof falls squarely on your shoulder. :-)
Now I want to make clear that I am against imposing new morality on people. Take for example the anti-abortionists' rhetoric, equating abortion to murder. If they can prove a fetus' personhood, legally and biologically, then I'd agree with them. Murder is murder, like infanticide is murder. But in this case abortion is excluded from my list, simply because they couldn't proof fetuses are people.
Growing up in China, many people believe non-interference from an outside power, no matter how morally corrupted internally, or how many people its regime kills. I can sympathize with this kind of view to a certain degree, and I am totally against military imposition of morality from outside. But here is the catch: as long as the said society is content to live in isolation, a failed state like Burma, or even like the China we grew up. But if you want to interact with the world, if you want to trade, played the rule, live by the moral standard most people of the world live by. You want to call it negotiation, fine, let's negotiate so that you live by these rules. ;-)

LOL

The Spartans didn't think their action was murder, they thought they were breeding soldiers. But they killed their murderers like any other states nonetheless - to reemphasize my earlier point, you can include or exclude certain acts from belonging to your list of moral standards depending on the era and its prevailing social mores. In this case murder has been expanded to include infanticide, and in some European countries it encompasses state sanctioned killing of lives, which prompted them to abolish capital punishment.
But they did not strike out murder from the List, nor did the Spartans.
I didn't refute 抢婚 because I am not too familiar with the practice. But you can easily use the same argument above to refute it. After all, in Western society these days, a husband can be convicted of rape - it's just the expansion of the definition.
Look, from the very first post I already conceded that there are transitory values and moral standards that are subjected to modification. (That's why I don't consider myself an absolutist.) But there are some simple acts without adding mitigating factors that are forbidden universally, through all civilizations.

(1)
Relativism, a theory that conceptions of truth and moral values are not absolute but are relative to the persons or groups holding them, has been receiving since the election of Pope Benedict XVI.
"Having a clear faith, based on the creed of the church, is often labeled today as a fundamentalism. ... Whereas relativism, which is letting oneself be tossed and 'swept along by every wind of teaching,' looks like the only attitude acceptable to today's standards."
"We are moving toward a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as for certain and which has as its highest goal one's own ego and one's own desires."
From the homily delivered at Mass hours before the beginning of the conclave that would elect him pope, April 18, 2005.
(2) (ethical relativism)
Any view that maintains that the truth or falsity of statements of a certain class depends on the person making the statement or upon his circumstances or society. Historically the most prevalent form of relativism has been (ethical relativism).
(3) (哲学观)(perspectivism)
The permanently tempting doctrine that in some areas at least, truth itself is relative to the standpoint of the judging subject (‘beauty lies in the eye of the beholder’). The first classical statement is the doctrine of the Sophist Protagoras that ‘man is the measure of all things’. Relativism may be a global doctrine about all knowledge, or a local doctrine about some area (aesthetics, ethics, or judgements of secondary qualities, for example). The aspects of the subjects supposed to determine what truth is ‘for them’ may include historical, cultural, social, linguistic, or psychological background, or brute sensory constitution. Relativism is one attempt to take these contingencies into account in formulating the relationship between the believer and the truth believed. It may be regarded as an attempt to avoid the scepticism that almost inevitably follows when an absolute conception of truth is combined with recognizing our differently rooted, variable, contingent ways of making judgements. Relativism is frequently rejected on the grounds that it is essential to the idea of belief or judgement that there are standards that it must meet, independently of anyone's propensity to accept it. Inability to make sense of such standards eventually paralyses all thought. Sophisticated relativists such as James (who described pragmatism as a form of relativism) reply that assessments of truth and falsity may be made in a disciplined way within a framework, even if the framework is itself contingent, and that the ‘circumpressure of experience’ is all we need and can have as a ‘guarantee against licentious thinking’ (The Meaning of Truth, 1909). The central problem of relativism is one of giving it a coherent formulation, making the doctrine more than the platitude that differently situated people may judge differently, and less than the falsehood that contradictory views may each be true. Much postmodernist thought may be regarded as a somewhat abandoned celebration of relativism.
i. The claim that there is no knowledge independent of an individual, and that all knowledge is created within a cultural system. It therefore follows that there can be no absolute or independent means of judging between different knowledge claims, including science. However, such relativism is self-refuting since what it states about knowledge must equally apply to that claim itself. In contrast, a relativist position which stops with the argument that knowledge is constructed and is temporally and spatially located does not necessarily have these problems. Relativism is a charge often directed against post-processual archaeologists; it is a primary concern of the constructivist philosophy of science.
ii. The belief that all accounts of the past are equally valid in their own terms, there being no neutral or objective way to judge between them.
iii. The view that other cultures are no better or worse than any other, they are simply different.
Relativism is the idea that some elements or aspects of experience or culture are relative to, i.e., dependent on, other elements or aspects.
Common statements that might be considered relativistic include:
"That's true for you but not for me."
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
"You can't judge other cultures by the standards of your own."
Some relativists claim that humans can understand and evaluate beliefs and behaviors only in terms of their historical or cultural context. There are many forms of relativism which vary in their degree of controversy.[1] The term often refers to truth relativism, which is the doctrine that there are no absolute truths, i.e., that truth is always relative to some particular frame of reference, such as a language or a culture. Another widespread and contentious form is moral relativism.
Relativism can be contrasted with:
Universalism—the view that facts can be discovered objectively and that they thus apply universally in all situations, times and places.
Objectivism—the view that existence exists outside of consciousness and value is created through conscious evaluation of reality versus one's nature.
Intrinsicism—the view that cognitive, aesthetic and ethical values are independent of human thinking.
Absolutism—the view that beauty, truth, etc, are timeless and unchanging qualities.
Monism—the view that in any given area there can be no more than one correct opinion.
Subjectivism—the view that any philosophical or moral question has an answer that is not falsifiable, and is therefore subjective.
Anthropological relativism refers to a methodological stance, in which the researcher suspends (or brackets) his or her own cultural biases while attempting to understand beliefs and behaviors in their local contexts. This has become known as methodological relativism, and concerns itself specifically with avoiding ethnocentrism or the application of one's own cultural standards to the assessment of other cultures. This is also the basis of the so-called "emic" and "etic" distinction, in which:
An emic or insider account of behavior is a description of a society in terms that are meaningful to the participant or actor's own culture; an emic account is therefore culture-specific, and typically refers to what is considered "common sense" within the culture under observation.
An etic or outsider account is a description of a society by an observer, in terms that can be applied to other cultures; that is, an etic account is culturally neutral, and typically refers to the conceptual framework of the social scientist. (This is complicated when it is scientific research itself that is under study, or when there is theoretical or terminological disagreement within the social sciences.)

“或说绝对真理的存在应当是和我们的认知无关的”: yes, that's part of my definition of 绝对真理。

LOL

如果把真理当成终极的,you can take knowledge as piecemeal truth.

Does personality play a crucial role in politics? - Re: Relativism: Please Show Your True Colorsposted on 10/08/2009

It depends on the levels of analysis. At the individual level, the answer is yes. But only the personalities of political leaders and elites count. The masses can only indirectly influence the policy outcome. - Re: Relativism: Please Show Your True Colorsposted on 10/10/2009

- posted on 10/23/2009

- posted on 10/23/2009

How can I be so sure of my moral beliefs to want to impose them on everybody else? Then again how can I be so unprincipled not to demand certain fundamental rights for everyone?
I am hopelessly befuddled:-), maybe confusing moral concept and enforcement this time.

For those of you that thinks morality is relative, what about social justice?
