- Thanks for Liao Kang's generosity! I am sure I will put it in good use.
Um, I've got a few questions to ask.
1. It is just a "novel"? I thought it sounded very realistic. Come to think of it, I have a friend whose older brother went to the countryside and came home years later without his once very handsome eyebrows plus hair, much like MonaLisa, too. It was called, I was told, "Gui-ti-tou" (devil shaved your head). Maybe it's also due to mulnutrition. Also I heard someone in my childhood neighborhood lost his life in the countryside prematurally as a "sent-down youth".
2. About timing, there is an error:
Shangde is one year older than "I". "I" was 18 in 1971. So Shangde should be 19 in 1971. And when Shangde lost his life in 1974, he should be 22, not still 19. Right? Sorry for finding faults in your otherwise excellent writing.
It took me much longer time to read the English version but I feel it's highly worthwhile!

谢鼓励。这是十多年前上学时参加英文小说写作竞赛时写的。应该好好儿改改,但没那心思了。中文倒是改进了一点。诸位尽管用吧,文革不能忘。 >
