During the Meiji period, the Japanese sent many people to study western governments and technology. In 1871, Prince Iwakura, shown here, sailed from Yokohama at the head of the first diplomatic mission to the West. Iwakura's main purpose was to revise the "unequal treaties" with western nations. He failed to achieve this goal. But he did bring back detailed information about the Industrial Revolution taking place in the West.
