July - Ruozhi is right. 'Istanbul' is consisted of small stories, so you can start anywhere and do not have to worry about finishing. I heard that "Snow" is more entertaining than "Red".
Ruozhi - But Naipaul was born in Trinidad (to an Indian family there indeed). It is unethical to give too much up in a book review, is it not? :-)
Hua - These little pieces are mostly just for fun and probably only good for cafe gossips, thus not to be taken seriously (with the exception of the pieces dealing with science, I guess). Thank you for the encouragement. :-) - posted on 11/20/2006
But he's a British citizen of Indian heritage who just happened to be born in Trinidad. :-) He's also famous (together with Rushdie) for holding an unsympathetic (or even contempt) point of view of his ancestral homeland and the third world.I'm not sure if he's pleased to be called a Trinidadian. Indo-Trinidian are simply referred as Indians or East Indians.

Naipaul appears to regard himself as writer of Caribbean origin, as reflected in his semi-autobiographical novel "The Enigma of Arrival". In fact, some of his writing projects were supported by the Trinidad government.
Naipaul was born in 1932 in Trinidad, which was a British colony. He was raised in Port of Spain, the Capital of Trinidad, and educated there at the Queen's Royal College. He won a scholarship and went to Oxford in 1950 when he was 18. I would say he is a hundred percent Trinidadian, even though when he was young he was looked upon as an outsider because of his Indian ancestry. He felt like an outsider in England also because of his Caribbean background.
I think it is perhaps because of his "outsider" status that he was able to examine and appreciate different cultures.

Let us label him as a "British citizen of West Indian heritage". :-) - Re: 读帕慕克的散文集《伊斯坦布尔》posted on 11/20/2006
