平安夜歌是一首傳統的十分流行的聖誕歌曲。平安夜頌歌原始的歌詞由Josef Mohr用德語寫成，作曲則是由奧地利一所小學的校長Franz Gruber完成。現代傳唱的版本的樂曲與Gruber原版有細微的不同(特別是在最後部分的變化)。
據說此歌被翻譯成世界上超過300多種語言，永遠是最流行的聖誕歌曲。沒有音樂伴奏人們也會經常吟唱，在路德教會他有特殊的重要意義。
這首頌歌1818年12月25日第一次在奧地利Oberndorf當地的尼古拉教堂演出。Mohr在此之前2年就已經寫出了歌詞,但是在這個平安夜他才帶給Gruber，請求他編一首吉他伴奏曲子。這樣做的原因不明；可能Mohr只是想為午夜彌撒作一首新的頌歌，也有傳說當晚尼古拉教堂的管風琴不能工作(故事一個流行的版本說因為老鼠咬壞了管風琴的風箱)。
奧地利Oberndorf的平安夜博物館和紀念小教堂順帶說一下, 尼古拉教堂因為洪水1900年代早期遭到破壞，因此小鎮的中心遷移到河上游較安全的地方，一所新的教堂建在了靠近一坐新橋的岸邊。 一個很小的稱作"Stille-Nacht-Gedächtniskapelle" (平安夜紀念小教堂)小教堂建在了原來被毀壞的教堂遺址上，旁邊最近的房子又改建成了一個博物館,這裡全年都吸引著全世界的遊客前來訪問，但是起初的時候只是在12月。
原始手稿已經遺失,不過1995年發現了Mohr的一份經研究確定於1820年左右所寫的手稿。手稿顯示Mohr在1816年他被分配到奧地利Mariapfarr的清教徒教堂的時候寫了歌詞，還顯示Gruber在1818年為歌詞作曲. 這是現存最早的手稿，也是唯一的Mohr的筆跡寫成的。 Gruber所作的曲子受到當地想見音樂的影響。歌曲的旋律類似於奧地利民間音樂和岳得爾歌.
