Over This, Your White Grave
Over this, your white grave
the flowers of life in white--
so many years without you--
how many have passed out of sight?
Over this your white grave
covered for years, there is a stir
in the air, something uplifting
and, like death, beyond comprehension.
Over this your white grave
oh, mother, can such loving cease?
for all his filial adoration
a prayer:
Give her eternal peace--
[Krakow, spring 1939]
The Quarry
He wasn't alone.
His muscles grew into the flesh of the crowd, energy their pulse,
As long as they held a hammer, as long as his feet felt the ground.
And a stone smashed his temples and cut through his heart's chamber.
They took his body and walked in a silent line
Toil still lingered about him, a sense of wrong.
They wore gray blouses, boots ankle-deep in mud.
In this, they showed the end.
How violently his time halted: the pointers on the low voltage dials jerked, then dropped to zero again.
White stone now within him, eating into his being, taking over enough of him to turn him into stone.
Who will lift up that stone, unfurl his thoughts again under the cracked temples?
So plaster cracks on the wall.
They laid him down, his back on a sheet of gravel.
His wife came, worn out with worry; his son returned from school
Should his anger now flow into the anger of others?
It was maturing in him through his own truth and love
Should he be used by those who came after, deprived of substance, unique and deeply his own?
The stones on the move again; a wagon bruising the flowers.
Again the electric current cuts deep into the walls.
But the man has taken with him the world's inner structure, where the greater the anger, the higher the explosion of love.

And I rememberd the mother of Jesus, on whom, alone of all the figures, my eyes found it possible to rest. She was a pretty gril whose stoic passivity---her head unmoving, held at that famous angle, even as she strode through the press of that Via Dolorosa---seems very sensual to me. Subliminally, as with the Virgin of Michelangelo's pieta, she was less a mother than a figure of thwarted desire, which was why, throughout my youth, her virginity underwrote my own. In the Mary of the sorroeful mysteries, spirituality and sensuality were not at war. In her, the word "passion" could slyly open to its other meaning.

Ҹո֪Ȿ鱻Oren Jacoby ıΪӰLAӳʽ ǵӰܺ͵ݵstatement. һcalling love 飬ţӰҲỽǶս˼NO WAR IS HOLY!
Synopsis
Constantines Sword is the story of James Carroll; a former Catholic priest on a journey to confront his past and uncover the roots of religiously inspired violence and war. His search also reveals a growing scandal involving religious infiltration of the U.S. military and the terrible consequences of religions influence on Americas foreign policy.
Carroll focuses on Christian antisemitism as the model for all religious hatred, exposing the cross as a symbol of a long history of violence against Jews (and, most recently, Moslems). The film brings the history of religious intolerance to life, tracing it as a source of the fanaticism that threatens the world today. At its core, Constantines Sword is a compelling personal narrative a kind of detective story as one man uncovers the dark areas of his own past, searching for a better future.
Directors Statement
Were living in a world at war. And were living at a time when people on both sides are using religion as an excuse to go to war.
When I met James Carroll and heard his concerns about the coming together of religion and power in our country (set against the backdrop of Americas rush to war) and the long history he had begun to trace of religious hatred and violence, I knew I had to work with him to get this story out.
Our movie poses the question: Where did anyone get the idea that it was all right to kill people in the name of God?
When we started to make this film we were shocked to discover how many Americans dont seem concerned about a possible breakdown between the separation of Church and State. They insist that America is a Christian nation, and have somehow revised history to convince themselves that this was a principle of our Founding Fathers. They dont seem at all concerned about the message this sends to the people in the Middle East, where were entrenched in whats already one of the longest wars ever fought by our country.
Whenever the U.S. is involved in an armed conflict and the lives of American men and women are on the line, its controversial to question the reasons that were in that war or in what direction our country is headed.
But for many Americans our film asks an even more troubling and controversial question: is there something in the DNA of Christianity C the majority religion in our country C that demonizes the other and is inclined toward violence? This has become an even more controversial point, since that was exactly the suggestion Pope Benedict XVI made about Islam. He called it a religion that embraced violence and rejected reason.
Just as he was saying these words, we were listening to Evangelical Christian preachers in Colorado calling young Americans to war and urging them to reject rational arguments and years of serious scientific research in physics, astronomy and biology that might conflict with the Churchs views about the origin of the earth, evolution and human sexuality.
At the U. S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs we discovered that the mission to proselytize and convert is so widespread in the US military, that it could be hard to convince the world that this is not our intent, that we are not a Crusading Christian nation, seeking converts.
I think many Americans are uncomfortable with the idea of religion and power coming together. This is true of people of faith as well as others. They will be glad for the opportunity offered by our film to get a clearer idea of where this impulse comes from and will have a better understanding for the terrible price that has been paid for it, especially by Jews.
On of the great pleasures directing Constantines Sword was working with the extraordinary actors Live Schrieber, Natasha Richardson, Phillip Bosco and Eli Wallach. Each portrays a real character in a voice over performance, and each of them delivers a key emotional turning point in the film.

CNN is airing a 3-episode prime-time documentary "God's Warriors", beginning yesterday at 9pm EDT. Tonight's episode is "Muslim Warriors." Very interesting and revealing.

Countless, but the key is "in the name of". Wars are fought for land, for dominance, for prestige, but never for God; God is the excuse, the justification, or as wukong put it, the name. So really it's not fair to blame God for wars fought by our humans. :)

Well. Why has God been such good excuse for wars then? How could all-seeing Almighty let those who had abused his name get away?

Because it's beyond reason therefore the most convenient. Can you think of a better one instead? Hints: naked truth doesn't work here :)

How do you know they've got away? Haven't you heard of the Last Judgement? :))

Again, why is God beyond reason and therefore so conveniently abused of? Any idea? Should God take some responsibility so to speak?
The world would have been long ruined by wars before the Last Judgement.
