mixed feelings. In general, I admire people who care more about ideals and social responsibilities, than their personal interests. But in a normal society, what should be the higher personal priority: social responsibility, or self interests? During Mao's time, it is definitely the former (at least in theory), but it didn't work. In the West, it is obviously the latter, while caring for others and for the society is also important, it is secondary. (Remember the safety instruction on the plane? always put your own oxygen mask first before helping others :-) ) This kind of philosophy seems to work better and have resulted in a more prosperous society.
I am afraid those in exile such as ƽ are being marginalized and forgotten over the years. But their sincerity and sacrifice for their ideals is always admirable.

What's been happenning in China is an illusion:
In the US, people have a choice; if you want to pay attention to politics and participate, lead political activities, be critical of the government, it is your choice. You can do whatever that's legal to express your ideas, opinions and hold meetings, organize parties to make your opinions known. The government ensures your rights to freedom of speech. The legal system ensures your rights of expressing your opinions.
In China, it seems like even though people have never been given the real rights to freedom of speech, the government managed to make a whole generation delusional: there is nothing wrong of trying to better personal life and self interests, if the others who want to be involved in social activities and politics are allowed to express their opinions and to have a place/platform to even tell the truth.
Right now, people in China are like guinea pigs in the cage C yes, you can do whatever, to feed your own personal desires without caring and considering others, without paying attention to ideas and better the society as a whole, as long as you are controlled by the owners, as long as you dont go out of the boundary of the cage. Whats the difference between a complete, independent thinking human being that's making choices and a well-fed, healthy, happily running around guinea pig? Whats the difference?

Unfortunately, the world of the events seems to move towards the way that China is managed. Even in the free US, George W. Bush and his administration are trying to control the messages and make the legal system less and less dependable. They are doing domestic wire taping, basically spying on the citizens without legal causes. Sounds familiar, but majority of citizens and politicians are angry at such practices. With the coming election, the situation will change. Here, the citizens have a choice to throw out a bad government. What people like Ms. Wang and her husband were fighting for were the possibilities of making such a choice in China. When the government made the society in that cage, Ms. Wang off course is sad.
Remember what made ³Ѹ become a writer?

The main and ultimate responsibility of the society, and the goal of all revolutions and other social reforms, supposedly, is to let the people be healthy and happy, and allow all members of the society the freedom of "complete, independent thinking". However. whether they are interested in this freedom or not is totally a personal choice. Even in those developed countries with a democratically elected government , where most of the people are well fed and healthy (maybe even happy), it is still a big question how many people are doing the so called "complete, independent thinking". It is definitely not a good indicator of the society if most members of a society are very much concerned with politics, such as during the CCP's ˶, such as during the anti-war movement in the US in the 60's.
BTW, "guinea pig" is not too helpful a word in this discussion.

Along the spectrum of different forms of society, from the left most "communism" to the very right wing ideals, I prefer something in between, typified by some Scandinavian and western European countries and Canada, high taxation and high social welfare. I hope China will eventually develop into such a society, and I hope China can skip the stage of early capitalism the west went through to avoid all the evils of inequality and brutality. The current polarization is worrisome to me.
This has been said before, the French revolution called for three things, liberty, equality and fraternity. But two of them may be potentially in conflict: liberty on the right and equality on the left . - Re: 华夏快递 : 王艾:谢谢你,流亡posted on 11/20/2007

Largely agree but Liberty is a tricky word, like Freedom. It doesn't tell us too much itself unless within a context - if those activists sing for Liberty, it's largely left; but if Mr Bush says that, it's just far right and more likely means some other people like those in Iran need an injection of Liberty. - posted on 11/20/2007
