From every tragedy comes a human triumph. Icarus¡¯s tragedy in Greek mythology inspired many and led to the ultimate success of Yves Rossy on May 14, 2008. His great accomplishment, itself an example of human determination, was largely unnoticed because it was untimely. The world has been lamenting on yet another epic-scale tragedy: the deaths of tens of thousands of Chinese in an earthquake.
But the message in his story should not be ignored. Out of this recent tragedy in Sichuan will also rise a people, courageous and determined, to build China into a place of hope, prosperity and human triumph.

There have been different interpretations of the Greek tragedy and its impact. One example here takes an extreme view. This view may nevertheless be true in many situations. For instance, whenever we fail to learn enough from a tragedy, the tragedy may as well become just ¡°a splash quite unnoticed.¡±
The last thing we want to see is the painful quake tragedy in Sichuan in May 2008 eventually falls into oblivion in history, along with many nameless victims.

Landscape with the Fall of Icarus
William Carlos Williams
According to Brueghel
when Icarus fell
it was spring
a farmer was ploughing
his field
the whole pageantry
of the year was
awake tingling
near
the edge of the sea
concerned
with itself
sweating in the sun
that melted
the wings' wax
unsignificantly
off the coast
there was
a splash quite unnoticed
this was
Icarus drowning

It takes only one, as ordinary as the shepherd boy is in the painting, to notice and to advocate for the remembering, even after he grows up. Many tragedies like the coming of the Nazi bloodshed, on the other hand, were predicted or envisioned, but only had to be remembered afterwards......

That's certainly true, except in this particular case the shepherd is not looking in the right direction. :) This painting is like an "I SPY" picture: it took me awhile to find Icarus in the picture. - posted on 05/20/2008
:) who is the guy by the water?

I'm not good at any I-SPY game, I must admit.
