Simon Singh的 Fermat Last Theorm (费马最后定理),和 The Code Book (密码)

John Battelle: The Search
Chris Anderson: The Long Tail

hummmmm. Any books for Wiki ? - the way the information is organised is claimed to be essentially superior to Google, in the modern world of information democracy instead of information dominance.
I heard various sayings that Wiki search, if it's becoming a search engine too, will present us more objective and credible results than Google can offer - the latter's results can be manipulated.
Bill 说 google 最后还得失败(不知是不是酸葡萄?),就是因为 “results can be manipulated”。

Song of the Dodo by David Quammen
Rachel Carson: Witness for Nature by Linda Lear
Ancestral Passions: The Leakey Family and the Quest for Humankind's Beginnings by Virginia Morell

Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution by Michael J. Behe
- posted on 04/19/2007
Soulmate, I read whatever she reads :)

Monographs are hard to generate sizable profit, if any profit at all, because of the limited readership. I think Maya meant textbooks or popular science books for general public.
Apart from that, that are a few authors out there who write higher-level science fictions. Michael Crichton is one of them. I have read a few of his books. "State of Fear" and "Prey" are two particularly worth reading, and possibly translating into another language. Anybody interested in environmental issues should read "State of Fear", just to get an informed second opinion.

Fermat Last Theorm,or whatever he writes!
"Black Holes and Time Warps" by Kip Thorne
"The Fabric of the Cosmos" and "The Elegant Universe" both by Brian Greene - posted on 04/20/2007
George Gamow Russian-born American nuclear physicist known for his work on radioactivity and genetic information as well as his books popularizing theories of physics.
This is a very fun and great book to read:
Thirty Years That Shook Physics: The Story of Quantum Theory, 1966, Dover Publications, ISBN 0-486-24895-X.
It ends with a dramatic playscript (also illustrated) of the history of atomic physics with the scientists cast in roles after the model of Goethe's Faust.
(Gretchen)
My Mass is zero
My Charge is the same
You are my hero
Neutrino's ,s name.
I am your fate,
And I am your key
Closed is the gate
For lack of me
Beta-rays through
With ,e to pair
The N-spin's wrong
If I'm not there
My Mass is zero
My Charge is the same
You are my hero
Neutrino's my name
My psyche turns
To you, my own
My poor heart yearns
For you alone
My lovesick soul
Is yours to win
I can't control
My trembling spin
My Mass is zero
My Charge is the same
You are my hero
Neutrino's my name
......
(Mystical chorus)
Now a reality
Once but a vision
What classificality,
Grace and precision!
Hailed with cordiality,
Honored in song,
Eternal Neutrality
Pulls us along!

Your analysis on the potential profitability of the book might be correct. I just wanted to add that since this book is Douglas Hofstadter's follow-up to GEB (An Eternal Golden Braid), which enjoyed enormous popularity in China back in the 80s, there's a good chance this new piece may make it to bestseller list again. But my optimism may be totally misplaced.

No I was not referring to the profitability of this particular title. Rather, I was making a general statement. With regard to DH's latest book, I think it is an excellent choice for interested publishers. The author's name sells itself as far as profitability is concerned. (Strictly speaking this one is not a technical monograph. Instead its targeted readership is the public.)
The GEB book has registered fondly in my memory. You are right it was very popular back in the mid 80's among college students, of which I was one. I bought this book along with many other titles in the "Advancing Towards the Future" series, some of them are still sitting on the bookshelves collecting dust. :-)
