The Cappies (a national high school theater program)有关于我儿子演出的三篇报道。

Each immigrant who enters the U.S. brings a unique background and distinctive aspirations across the border. Yet many people view these citizens as a faceless, nameless mass to be feared or ignored. In Anonymous, Clayton High School explored the politics and paranoia associated with immigration in modern American society.
Playwright Naomi Iizuka adapted Homer’s The Odyssey, the classic tale of a war hero’s epic journey home from the Trojan Wars, into the modernized story of Anonymous. By transforming a sea goddess into a sunbathing blonde and a Cyclops into a killer reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter, Iizuka instilled the immortal tale with a contemporary relevance. The nonlinear narrative follows the travels of Anon, a boy separated from his mother during their journey to America. As Anon searches for his mother and his memories across the nation that is now his home, he encounters others who have come from faraway lands who share his anonymity.
Combining visually stunning technical aspects and savvy acting, Clayton presented a bold play that dared to reach beyond the typical boundaries of high school theater.
As the hero of the piece, Kuang Zong brought authentic thoughtfulness and confusion to his portrayal of Anon. While reminiscing about his mother or retelling his adventures, Zong maintained a pensive demeanor, crafting a character believably struggling with his identity and past. As Nemasani, Anon’s mother, Mariah Smith adopted brave inflection and resolute mannerisms to express her character’s unwavering strength and undying love for her son despite their separation.
While some actors demonstrated limited interpretation of their lines, Rebeccah Singer illustrated careful analysis of her role, effectively conveying the turmoil and sympathy of Ritu, an immigrant who listens to Anon’s story. Patrick Cunningham embodied the street smarts of Pascal, Anon’s fellow traveler, and displayed commendable focus in a monologue detailing his character’s traumatic background. As Serza, a drunken, disillusioned bartender, Sarah McAfee successfully utilized a tipsy gait and sharp line delivery. The entire cast periodically united to whisper in unison and pose in varying attitudes, creating evocative images such as the scatter of corpses in a war-torn land.
Such visuals were aided by the innovative techniques of Clayton’s capable tech crews. Striking light designs (Chris Williamson) and arresting original music enveloped the audience in color and sound, tossing them into tempests and battlefields among the cast. Breathtaking pictures of blinding city lights and crashing waves, projected on a brick-like backdrop, heightened the intensity of dramatic moments and provided a distinctive playing space (Erin Knadler, Dillon Desloge, Chris Williamson). The imaginative use of simple sliding blocks allowed actors to use the set pieces as a workbench, a boat, and a train, in addition to affording the opportunity to experiment with unusual blocking.
As actors representing immigrants who died during their journeys to American spread throughout Clayton’s theater, audience members were forced to regard more than the fictional story set before them and honor the character’s demands--“Remember me”--perhaps hastening the day when these individuals will no longer be anonymous.

Clayton High School’s recent performance of Anon(ymous) revealed the importance of family and the impact of heritage.
Anon(ymous), a drama by Naomi Iizuka is based on Homer’s epic tale The Odyssey. The tale centers around the modern Odysseus, a young boy named Anon. Anon and his mother try to escape the war havocked nation they live in to find peace, but are separated when the boat they try to escape on is wrecked in a horrible sea storm. Although both survive neither of them know if the other is alive. Anon is searching for his identity, which since washing onto the shores of America is completely gone, and hopelessly searches for his mother. Along the way he meets others who have lost their heritage and gets into frightening situations that force him to grow and question his entire journey.
Anon, played by Kuang Zong, was portrayed with strong longing emotion for a mother that he was slowly forgetting. Zong’s strong emotion was matched by the intense emotion and stage presence of Nemasani, Anon’s mother, played by Mariah Smith. The strong female presence rang true throughout the entire show with memorable characters such as Ritu (Rebeccah Singer) an Indian housewife forced to work day in and day out just for survival, and Serza (Sarah McAfee) a horribly desperate women ruined by alcohol and day to day life.
The performance was intensely visual, modern, and abstract. These elements were portrayed through the incredible lighting, sound, and set design. Because of the rapidly changing locations of the non-linear play, the set had to be morphed into places so vastly different as a ship at sea to a butcher shop. The simple set design and moving set pieces did just that, with the added effect of video projected onto a set piece wall. As lights flashed, a sound of a rushing train played, and video of passing subway walls went by as the meager black box theatre was changed into a ride on top of a subway train, and much, much more.
Although technical aspects were above par, the difficult message of the modern play was at times overwhelming for a high school performance. The show also presented moments of intense shock and even horror, such as the demented blood soaked butcher and clawing ghosts behind a silk white screen. Costumes were also distracting as they were a mix of modern dress draped by decorative material.
If you're looking to be intrigued mind, body, and soul, Clayton High’s performance of Anon(ymous) is the show for you, and it will leave any viewer questioning their treatment of the cultural diversity that makes up America itself.

Imagine not remembering who you are. Imagine not knowing how you got here. Imagine not knowing where you came from. A tragic tale of lost identity came to life in Clayton High School’s engaging production of “Anonymous”.
Originally produced as children’s theatre in 2005, Naomi Iizuka’s “Anonymous” tells the story of a young boy who forgot his identity. Based on Homer’s The Odyssey, “Anonymous” is told in a non-linear fashion in twenty-four short scenes. Themes of politics, identity, and love, compile to form a show that has been enjoyed by all ages.
Uniquely situated in a black box theatre, actors took advantage of all entrances to the space to deliver a very intimate performance.
Kuang Zong ably portrayed the lost and confused Anon with vocal clarity, and characteristic movements. Opposite Zong was the commanding Mariah Smith as Anon’s lonely mother, Nemasani. Smith’s powerful voice and clear vocal expression convincingly revealed the pain involved in the loss of a loved one.
Actors upheld somewhat consistent characters. Commendable performances were given by Patrick Cunningham as Pascal, Anon’s intelligent and relentless comrade. Rebeccah Singer also impressed as Ritu. A believable character and memorable presence identified this caring woman caught between helping a boy who lost himself and maintaining the safety of her own family. Convincingly playing the blind Ali, Nathan Crall offered a laud worthy performance. Distinct movements, and fully developed character aided Sarah McAfee in her portrayal of the bar tender Serza. Offering comic relief in a somewhat gloomy toned show was Susie Wirthlin as Calista. A valley girl attitude and flamboyant character anchored an impressive performance.
Creativity proved to be a key element in “Anonymous”. Chris Williamson’s impressive lighting design attributed to the intimacy of the performance, and Erin Knadler’s distinguishing sound cues aided in establishing the setting of each scene. A small performance space posed no challenge for the cast as they moved through a simple yet resourceful set. A projector displaying weather and lit up signs added a unique aspect to the performance.
Clayton High School revealed themes of love, loss, and finding one’s self in a memorable of “Anonymous” that left audiences wondering, “Who am I really?”

- posted on 11/21/2008

就像上一次与风子讨论的,在美国(或者不包括日本的西方),“They care more about how you say it, not exactly what you say.”

- posted on 11/22/2008
