The well-known "fact" of the female mantis killing and eating the male during mating (and the headless male continuing to mate) may be more urban legend than fact. It has been observed only rarely, perhaps only once (some say never). It has been observed only in a labratory setting. It has been argued that this behavior is the result of an artificial situation or simply a circumstance of the female starving.
