Thanks WOA. You have my high regards. No intention to turn up the heat, but someone really needs to sweat this time, for I do not believe a messege as innocuous as that one could disappear all by itself. The only explanation is that someone was stalking me, for reason only the stalker could tell. It's quite amazing that a low-key guy like me could attract somebody's persistent attention. Feeling like being treated as a big shot, that's something I should celebrate tonight. :-)

廖康的文章现在越来越有姚文元的味道。 “三国演义”是“三国志通俗演义”的简称，开宗明义，是写给没有多少文化但有求知欲望的贩夫走卒们看的。我猜罗贯中从来没有想上甚么文学殿堂。难怪遭到廖康这样的文化人的看不起。华盛顿邮报的Bob Wardwood也是报告文学(investigative reporting)的大家，前纽约时报的Harrison Salisbury也是。当然，他们的东西即使获得普利策奖，也是给贩夫走卒们看的。Wardwood的"Bush at War"三部曲，把名字改成“布什反恐演义”其实更好。突然想起鲁迅的一句话，稍为改动一下送给廖康：一部作品的好坏，文人学士

I think "vicarious" is more like 感同身受. Empathy, on the other hand, emphasizes identification based on understanding (or reasoning).

The only thing that can not be burned is memory.:-) If you live in a risky area, it's not a bad idea to think about evacuation. For example, given the area you live (which is close to that of mine, I suppose), always make sure you have enough gas in your car to drive 2 hours at a speed of 25 mph. That's a drive to West Virginia in a slow-moving traffic. Store an extra 2 gals of gas in your garage. 达芬奇密码说到底是一本小说，很少有人把它当历史看。丹布朗的小说，很适合我这样没有多少文化的人看。不仅丹布朗，其他如Michael Crichton, John Grisham, Tom Clancy的小说也是如此。

Not sure if it has the effect you mentioned, but it might if you ONLY read this kind of stuff and you read it everyday.:-) If you read occasionally, it might help you put things in perspective. 这是国会议员对一位到访的九秩老人、女士、历史人物的应有的礼数，不能推出宋美龄对美国政府有任何实质影响。编“Baby Einstein”的那位女士，以及去年在纽约地铁救人的黑人兄弟，到访国会山庄时也受到同样礼遇。

不一定要看圆脚趾国家。美国不是圆脚趾，但是基督教圆脚趾的势力相当强大。说来也许难以置信，在美国居然不少基督徒相信地球的历史只有6000年。我前不久在外地度假时就碰到两位。那是在看完IMAX新推出的“DINOSAUR 3D”巨屏幕电影以后。一对中年夫妇说这电影是BALONEY，因为里面说到恐龙在地球上存在了一亿八千年，并于6千多万年前灭绝。而圣经上说地球的历史只有6000年。呵呵。据说，肯塔基州有个创世博物馆，里面有人类和恐龙6000年前在伊甸园里共存的展览，吸引了大批基督徒。

清朝也不是一无是处，尤其是前期康、雍、乾三朝。跟日本、俄罗斯比，也要看什么时候。晚清时是另一回事。清朝鼎盛期时期使中国的版图扩大了三倍以上（跟晚明时相比），柏杨说新的领土是满人带给中国的嫁妆。即使是清朝晚期，版图也比晚明时大得多。
