顶管仲。对温家宝的施政，老百姓当然可以骂，但这跟不分青红皂白地乱骂一气，是两回事。骂也要骂出水平来，否则，就是泼妇骂街，或者怨妇骂街。说北京是鬼城，这是有阴暗心理的人才说得出的话。（Mr.Zili, do you really know what "ghost town" means?) 在美国，批评布什，也主要是批评他的内外政策，这跟对他进行个人攻击不是一回事。。

西方人常说国家和政府是necessary evil. 也就是说国家和政府这种组织，虽然inherently evil，但却是必不可少的。有些活动，如公益、福利、环境、空间探索、基础设施、社会治安、对抗犯罪等等，没有政府出面恐怕不行。完全交给私人办理不可能。基础科学研究也需要政府支持。比如美国的众多的国家实验室，只赔不赚，估计没有私人企业愿意办。高士伯在“The Affluent Society”里曾经描绘过这样的图景: "The family which takes its mauve and cerise, air-conditioned, power-steered, and power-braked automobile out for a tour passes th

You really can not tell the difference between the Sun rising every day and a coin landing head up after a random tossing? For the former, we can predict not only the Sun will rise tomorrow, but also the time of its rise with clockwork precision. That's waht we call "certainty". For the latter, how much can you say about it, even if you have all the measurement and computing gear at your disposal? It seems that you have confused causality with probablity.

CNN is airing a 3-episode prime-time documentary "God's Warriors", beginning yesterday at 9pm EDT. Tonight's episode is "Muslim Warriors." Very interesting and revealing. How many wars were fought in the name of God?

I have serious doubt about these figures. Where did you find them? I have a 6-yr old in my house, whose first language is English. And I have frequent contact with other kids of his age. I believe none of them has a vocabulary of 4000-5000. BTW, Webster's Third International Dictionary (3rd edition) has more than 500,000 entries, most of them have outlived their relevance.

Based on a true story. Starring Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, and Philip Hoffman. Highly recommended if (and only if) you are interested in Cold War history, CIA covert operations, US congressional politics, and events leading up to the rise of Taliban and Bin Laden in Afghanistan. 严重同意浮生和八爷。只补充一点：对死者的宽恕，无论他生前如何作恶，这在其它文化里也有，而且其精神不比基督教弱。比如在日本，依神道教，所有死者都是神。所以靖国神社里供有东条、冈村等战犯的牌位，就反映了这一点。

Many Vietnam vets like to ride motorcycle together. They have formed a club called VNVMC (Vietnam Vets Motorcycle Club). If you see a group of motorcyclists in their late 50's storming through the street together, that's probably them.

I just began to read this one, great book. Monographs are hard to generate sizable profit, if any profit at all, because of the limited readership. I think Maya meant textbooks or popular science books for general public. Apart from that, that are a few authors out there who write higher-level science fictions. Michael Crichton is one of them. I have read a few of his books. "State of Fear" and "Prey" are two particularly worth reading, and possibly translating into another language. Anybody

Just read the news about VT shooting. It's very sad. I have been to the campus a few times, and had a fond memory of it. The campus is located in a small peaceful rural town in southwest Virginia, which should be quite safe. The school has decent engineering programs, in addition to pretty good sport teams. But, it only takes a crazy guy with his finger on the trigger to make this happen. sad...... It's truly a heartbreaking day for the Hokies...

钱钟书有“宋诗选注”，虽然是50年代中期选的，但还是不脱“钱”味，特别是他写的注。据说日本人对此书很推崇，胡适也说选、注都是上乘。钱钟书自己承袭同光体，好作才子诗，而同光体又与江西诗派有联系，所以他选的诗反映了他个人的偏好。不过，因为他自己读书多，所以他的注解写得与一般人不太一样。比如，"春风又绿江南岸"一句，也算是广为传诵的名句。但是老钱经过索隐钩沉，论证这句不能算王安石原创，同样诗意唐人已用过。他还批评王安石把这个诗意反复使用，如同今天某些学者同样一个idea可以反复写好几篇文章一样，意思基本相同。所以

就事论事，伊拉克的WMD问题，并不是指鹿为马那样简单。在伊战开始前，美英以及其他西方国家的情报界对于伊拉克究竟有无WMD，并无定论。萨达姆本人基于国内政治的需要，特别是为了威摄库尔德人，也多次故施烟幕，混淆视听。据Bob Woodward介绍，当时美国情报界的最大问题是，在伊拉克内部没有可靠的human intelligence。所以一切都依赖于第二手情报和卫星图片之类。这就使情报的准确性大打折扣。当时国防部情报局(DIA)根据第二手情报和卫星侦察，将伊拉克境内900多个地点列为隐藏WMD的可疑地点。后来经过逐处核查，证实没有一处跟WMD有关。

Ha, I guess that's because you were in the audience. Typically an instructor gets distracted and displays sheepish behavior when there is a pretty girl in his class. :-) Maxwell eqs are difficult to work with for the beginners, but they are also a beauty to behold once you are able to derive from a set of mere 4 eqs some truly amazing results (such as the exisitence of the eletromagnetic wave and electromagnetic radiations, and calculating the speed of light.)
