Touché misfired this time. What is troubling about this novel is not the lack of law and order or even the lack of moral standard. What is missing here is human empathy, which exists very early on in human civilizations, maybe even before civilizations, maybe even when human were still monkeys. You don’t need any law or any ethic teachings to tell you that under normal circumstances it is not ok to eat your own species. You just know you shouldn’t do it. It is something innate.
